New Mercedes-AMG super electric SUV in the works

ABU DHABI: Mercedes-AMG, known for its iconic V-12 and V-8 engines, is evolving its lineup toward electrification. First, it introduced the C63 hybrid sports sedan, which pairs an electric motor with a 2.0-litre inline-four engine and then the Vision AMG concept, previewing a dedicated electric AMG model. Now, AMG has shifted its focus with the development of its first-ever all-electric SUV.

The EV will be based on the AMG.EA platform, Mercedes' MB.EA’s modified version and is equipped with Yasa’s advanced 480hp motors. This platform supports high-performance models with dual motors for over 1,000hp. AMG-specific silicon anode battery and the 800V system will further enhance performance.

Mercedes has not yet confirmed its upcoming electric SUV’s official name, calling it the "Born in Affalterbach" SUV. It will be the sixth model that AMG will develop, following two AMG GT generations, the SLS AMG and SL, and the electric sedan. It will succeed the AMG GLE 63 and will compete with the Porsche Cayenne electric, Lotus Eletre, and BMW XM hybrid.

Mercedes has promised the SUV will prioritize "performance and emotion" with an AMG-first approach. For development prototypes, test drives have been scheduled this winter.
