Dubai: The Dongfeng 008, a new six-seat family SUV, has been launched in the UAE by Dongfeng UAE and its distributor, MAHY Khoory Automotive. It arrives with a starting price of AED 139,900. 

The vehicle’s powertrain and second-row captain’s chairs set it apart from more conventional family SUVs in the market. And with a claimed combined range of 1,220 km, it looks ready for both daily drives and long road trips.

Range-Extender Powertrain Explained

The Dongfeng 008 isn’t a conventional hybrid. It uses a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) system, where a rear-mounted electric motor is solely responsible for driving the wheels. A 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine is also on board, but its only function is to act as a generator to recharge the battery. 

This setup allows for electric driving on shorter trips without total reliance on public charging stations for longer journeys.

Inside, the 008 has a three-row cabin with a 2+2+2 layout. The second-row captain's chairs are a notable feature for a family SUV. A large 15.6-inch touchscreen dominates the centre console, paired with a 19-speaker audio system. It also includes a temperature-controlled fridge that can cool items to 5°C or warm them to 50°C. With all seats in use, boot capacity is 292 litres, expanding to 783 litres with the third row folded down.
