DONGFENG Shine

Cabin

The moment you are inside the cabin, the car's target buyers and price segment become quite clear. There is nothing fancy or very premium, but the focus is on practicality and everyday usability. The Shine carries its sporty exterior theme straight into the cabin, built around a big touchscreen and two-tone trim.

But interestingly, for a compact sedan starting under AED 50,000, this is a far richer-looking interior than the price tag suggests. An orange-and-grey sports interior wraps around integrated leather sports seats, giving the cabin a livelier feel than the Shine's price suggests.

Also, there is a multifunctional steering wheel and a 13-inch multimedia touchscreen that dominate the dashboard. This is actually backed by a smaller 7-inch digital instrument display directly ahead of the driver. The keyless entry and engine start-stop system round out a list of small but useful details not always found at this end of the market.

Front Seat and Rear Seat

• Sports seats with electric adjustment on the top-end E3
• Contoured side bolsters for a sportier driving position than a flat bench
• Rear seats with adjustable headrests, per the variant feature list
• Center console armrest fitted across the range

Climate Control

Automatic air conditioning is standard from the base trim, with rear AC vents added from the mid E2 variant up.

Storage

• Cup holders and a bottle holder are built into the front doors
• Center console armrest with storage beneath, standard on all three variants
• An accessory power outlet fitted as standard

Charging

• USB charging is standard from the base trim
• Wireless charging is reserved for the top E3 variant
• An accessory power outlet is fitted as standard

Boot Space

The boot size is 454 litres, not a bad volume for a compact sedan. The boot opening is a conventional design without the wider-hinged tailgate some pricier rivals offer. This helps keep loading straightforward, if unremarkable.

The Shine's safety includes ABS with brake assist and electronic brake force distribution, backed by a vehicle stability control system and traction control as standard.

• Hill hold assist and a lane change indicator fitted across the range
• ISOFIX child seat anchors and an engine immobiliser standard from the base trim
• Tyre pressure monitoring is included on every variant
• A 540° panoramic camera is added starts from the mid E2 variant
• Side airbags, blind spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert are reserved for the top E3 variant

Front

The front is pretty standard, with a familiar look among sedans. Nothing is radically different, and for an entry-level sedan, this is not bad either. The highlight is the Eye of the Storm LED headlamps, which flank a bold front grille. This gives the Shine a sharper look than its price bracket typically delivers, and the LED daytime running lamps run above the headlights, keeping the front end lit and visible even in bright UAE daylight.

Side Profile

More or less the same goes for the side profile, with a pretty standard design. However, one thing you notice is that it looks rather big, even though the dimensions are of a compact size, thanks to the design. The dimensions run to 4,670 mm in length on a 2,680 mm wheelbase, keeping the Shine in line with compact sedan rivals like the MG5. Sporty brake callipers finished in colour accents are also visible through the wheels. This is generally true of cars much more expensive.

Alloy Wheels

Against a price-sensitive segment, there is limited choice here too. The Shine gets 16-inch wheels on the E1 and E2 trims, while the top E3 gets 17-inch wheels. The smaller wheels on the lower variants are a practical choice for durability and running costs over outright looks.

Rear

At the back, the biggest attraction is the striking LED tail lamps. They carry the same sharp signature as the headlights up front, while the overall rear design keeps things fairly clean. Interestingly enough, the rear end skips a heavy spoiler, keeping the overall look clean instead of boy-racer.

Colors

• White
• Grey
• Black

Three exterior colors are offered on the Shine, giving buyers a choice between plain white, grey, and black finish.

City Performance

The Shine's core strength is the price and the size as well, which makes it a good city driver for commuting or family driving.

• The gap between the two engine tunes turns into a real difference: the E3's 195 hp pulls away without feeling strained, while the base E1's 123 hp needs a firmer push on the accelerator to keep pace.
• A tight parking spot is easier to judge in the Shine than in a mid-size sedan. The compact 4,670 mm length leaves more margin on either side.
• The rear AC vents on the E2 and E3 keep back-seat passengers as comfortable as those up front through stop-start traffic, a comfort the base simply skips.
• Backing out of a packed building, the 540° panoramic camera fitted to the E2 and E3 removes most of the guesswork that judging the car's corners by mirrors alone would involve.
• Anyone considering the Shine against the MG5 on price alone will find the E1's simpler 123 hp tune is still enough for a daily Dubai commute without ever feeling like a compromise. Something quite key for the car.

Highway Performance

This powertrain, and the refinement, make the Shine a decent highway driver too.

• The first thing you notice is the quiet cabin. Despite the higher speeds on the highway, the noise stays low enough.
• It is a fuel-efficient sedan, which means your highway trips cost you less. And the 50-litre tank stretches further than a thirstier naturally aspirated rival in the same price bracket.
• An overtake on a two-lane stretch needs more patience with the base E1's 123 hp tune than it would with the E3's stronger output.
• A weekend run toward Sharjah or Ajman is where the Shine's price advantage over the MG5 and Kia Pegas matters most, since the fuel savings add up the same way regardless of which engine tune a buyer picks.

Ride and Handling

The Shine is a budget sedan built for everyday use, so ride comfort and easy handling matter more than sharp driving. The 16-inch wheels on the lower trims should leave more tyre sidewall than the E3's 17-inch wheels, which usually helps ride comfort over patched tarmac.

• A 2,680 mm wheelbase is long enough for a settled ride over the expansion joints, though a compact sedan will always move around more over a big dip than a longer, heavier car.
• Front-wheel drive, and a 4,670 mm length make the Shine easy to place through a roundabout. And on the E3, the 195 hp and 300 Nm call for a lighter right foot when pulling out of a corner on a damp road, with traction control to help.
• The contoured side bolsters on the sports seats hold the driver in place through bends. A useful point for a car that is mostly about daily comfort.
• ABS, electronic brake force distribution, and brake assist come on every variant, backed by stability and traction control and hill hold assist, so a hard stop on the approach to a signal should stay straight and controlled.

This compact sedan is available in three variants in the UAE, so buyers can choose different engine power and features based on budget and needs.

E1 1.5L is the entry variant that comes with a 123 hp engine. The features included are leather sports seats, the 13-inch touchscreen, keyless entry, and a core safety package built around ABS, traction control, and ISOFIX anchors.

E2: This is the middle variant, and the powertrain is absolutely the same. The major differences are feature upgrades like rear AC vents, a sunroof, and a 540° panoramic camera on top of the E1's equipment.

E3: Here at the top end, you get the same 1.5-litre engine, but it is turbocharged and tuned for higher power. The stronger 195 hp makes driving more fun with that extra power. In terms of features, in addition to what is available on the two lower variants, you also get side airbags, a leather steering wheel, electric seat adjustment, wireless charging, blind spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Zigwheels Recommendation

Now that the three variants are available, the selection is pretty straightforward. If you're mainly looking for a lower price for your compact sedan with all the regular core equipment, you can get a fully usable sedan from the E1 without paying for extras. Others who are considering their options for performance should look straight to the E3, since it's the only variant that gets the stronger 195 hp turbocharged engine, not just a longer feature list.

Today, the compact sedan segment looks way different than in the past. The reason is customer preference for SUVs, and so most brands offer them, but not all have given up on sedans. They still appeal to a segment of the market, and here, mostly right at the entry level, first-time buyers have few choices available. And here the Shine plays a simple game, with attractive and generous cabin space and aspirational features that make it stand out from its key rivals.

Clearly, Dongfeng's decision to reserve the stronger 195 hp engine for the top E3 instead of just adding features is an unusual move in this segment. One that rewards buyers willing to spend up for real extra power instead of just an extra kit.

Against the MG5 and Kia Pegas, the Shine looks like a good option mainly on price and cabin tech. The safety gap between the base E1 and the fully equipped E3 is wide enough that shoppers need to know the variant list carefully before choosing.

Those in the market looking for their first car or moving from a used car to a new one on a lower budget should definitely not miss the Shine.

It is a sporty-looking compact sedan that is not a stretch on the budget and does not feel incomplete either. That is what matters to most buyers in the segment.
