The MG 5 is a compact sedan from the British manufacturer. The grille in the front looks much like that of the MG RX5 with horizontal slats, flanked by the headlights. Except for the top-level Del trim, all other models get halogen projector headlamps with levelling functions. Daytime running lights (DRLs) surround the headlight units. The Del version gets all-around LED lighting. The car’s roofline has been pushed back further and the 2024 MG 5 looks somewhat like a fastback. The sentiment continues all around with sharp creases on the bodywork. The trunk has been shortened but is still deep enough to carry 512 litres of luggage. The taillights get bars that lend the back-end more character and appeal. The car runs on 15-inch alloy wheels.

The interior of the updated MG 5 isn’t classy. It wasn’t meant to be since this is a compact sedan targeted at the budget customer. The cabin is a bit dark. A lot of hard plastics have been used to save cost. But the cabin still manages to look nice and contemporary and is available in monotone black or dual-tone black-beige combination. The entry-level model gets cloth upholstery while the top-end model gets two-tone faux-leather seats. The dashboard is dominated by a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that gets Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support. It’s connected to a four-speaker sound system. The instrument cluster is a dual-dial setup with a centre screen that serves as a multifunction display for other bits of information. There aren’t many physical switches and almost all cabin functions are controlled by the infotainment unit. The icons are easy to operate and response is almost immediate. But a separate set of buttons for climate control would have reduced the over-dependency on the touchscreen.    

Storage is pretty good in the front with cupholders between the seats. There’s a storage tray in front of the shifter. A decent-size glovebox, centre console bin, and bottle holders in the doors offer convenient storage. 

Is the MG 5 spacious?

With 4,601 mm length, 1,818 mm width, and 1,489 mm height, the 2024 MG 5 is a spacious compact sedan in the Emirates market. Finding the most comfortable driving position is easy. But the steering wheel is tiltable only and doesn’t get any reach adjustment. Not that drivers with long arms will notice. The windscreen is wide and offers a great view of the road ahead. The two front seats get the maximum headroom and legroom. The front seats in the top-level model are electrically adjustable. They are nicely cushioned and offer adequate back support.

The rear seat of the 2025 MG 5 can accommodate three persons. It’s not like other entry-level sedans that claim to be five-seater but are in fact suitable for four passengers. The seat doesn’t get a central armrest which is obviously a cost-cutting measure. There’s also a single air-vent for the backseat and there’s no split-fold backrest. But the windows are large and make the cabin roomier. The air-conditioner cools the cabin fast.

What are the engine and transmission options for MG 5?

The 2025 MG 5 is hauled by a turbocharged, four-cylinder, 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 120 PS/150 Nm. The motor is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch. The numbers may not sound impressive but then this isn’t a sporty sedan either. The MG 5 is meant for daily commuting. In an urban setting, the MG 5 is a very capable car. The suspension is soft and pretty much absorbs most of the bumps and potholes. The steering wheel is light and nicely balanced. It promptly responds to commands. Overtaking on city roads isn’t an issue. The powertrain sounds as if naturally aspirated. It’s a bit thrashy and runs out of puff in upper revs. The ride quality is comfortable in an otherwise noiseless cabin.
