Lamborghini's Shift in Strategy - Urus EV Delayed, New PHEV SUV Set for 2029

Abu Dhabi : Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. is taking time to perfect its electric portfolio.

• Lamborghini has decided to equip the next-generation Urus with a plug-in hybrid system. 
• Originally, the plan was to make Urus fully electric, but the company signalled that customers preferred a hybrid instead. 
• The new Lanzador electric vehicle might also face delays, but a final decision is expected early next year.

Lamborghini is reworking its plans for the Urus SUV lineup. During a recent media talk, Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini’s CEO, said a new plug-in hybrid Urus will come out in 2029. The hybrid version of the current Urus was introduced in 2024, called the SE. Now, the launch of the fully electric Urus EV has been postponed till 2035.

Present Urus Hybrid Helped Cut Emissions

The current Urus hybrid was launched in 2024 as the SE model. This helped Lamborghini lower emissions and meet tougher rules. The Urus SE is the most powerful version of this SUV. It uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine plus an electric motor, producing about 800 hp altogether. 

That beats the Urus S and even the sporty Urus Performante, which has 666 horsepower. The Urus SE can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds with a top speed of around 312 kmph. It also has a battery that can power the electric-only drive for up to 60 km, thanks to its 25.9 kWh pack.

Launch of the next-gen Urus

Lamborghini plans to replace the current Urus with a new plug-in hybrid in 2029. This next model will use more advanced technology. It will help the brand prepare for a fully electric future. The new Urus PHEV will underpin Volkswagen Group’s SSP platform. This new base will support better electric driving and future upgrades.

Arrival of the Urus EV

The big change will happen in 2035. That is when Lamborghini plans to introduce its first fully electric Urus. The EV will have four electric motors and all-wheel drive. It will also be built on the SSP platform, offering longer range and faster charging. The delay gives Lamborghini more time to develop electric tech that matches its performance standards.

Bigger Plans to achieve net-zero emissions

This transition is part of Lamborghini’s larger plan to cut emissions. The company wants to do this while keeping its sporty feel. The latest Revuelto supercar has already become a plug-in hybrid. The next Huracán will follow the same route. 

By taking small steps now, Lamborghini hopes to satisfy drivers who love the sound of petrol engines but want greener options.

The launch of the Lanzador EV might be delayed again, with a decision expected early next year. However, Winkelmann has shown support for releasing it later in this decade. No matter what happens, the project has already been pushed back from 2028 to 2029.

The Lanzador concept was first shown at Monterey Car Week in 2023. It offered a look at the brand’s fourth main model. The car was a stylish two-door crossover with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. The interior used mostly eco-friendly materials.

As of now, fans will have to wait a little longer for a pure electric Urus. But they will get new options along the way.
