When the Car Starts Watching the Road

With the Hyundai SmartSense system, the driver isn't entirely alone behind the wheel. Blind Spots, Lanes and Traffic Get Extra Attention

Many of the Azera’s assistance systems are focused on the common challenges of multi-lane driving in the UAE. A collection of features works to monitor the areas the driver can’t easily see and helps the car maintain its position within a lane. Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), for example, can intervene with braking if the driver attempts to change lanes while another vehicle is in the blind spot.

It’s supported by a warning system (BCW) and the Blind Spot View Monitor (BVM), which displays a camera feed of the corresponding blind spot in the instrument cluster when an indicator is used.

Reversing Gets Its Own Safety Net

Parking lots and reversing out of tight spaces can create risks that are hard to spot from the driver’s seat. The Azera uses its rear-facing sensors and cameras to create a safety net for low-speed manoeuvres. If it detects an oncoming vehicle, it provides a warning and can apply the brakes if necessary. 

This works alongside the Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA) for static obstacles. For visibility, a Surround View Monitor gives a 360-degree bird’s-eye view around the car. There’s also a clever Safe Exit Assist, which warns occupants of approaching traffic from behind before they open a door.

Smart Parking Assistance

Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 (RSPA 2) allows the car to handle the steering, acceleration, braking and gear shifts required to move into or out of a parking space. What’s different is that the driver can operate the system from outside the vehicle, using buttons on the smart key.

This is helpful for getting the car into very tight parallel or perpendicular spots where opening a door would be difficult. The system is supported by the conventional front and rear parking sensors and the Surround View Monitor, giving the driver multiple ways to approach a difficult parking situation.
