Dubai: Hyundai has finally pulled the covers off the fifth-generation Tucson, and it is a proper redesign rather than a light refresh. • Rear doors now open to 83 degrees, up from 73, for easier access

• Despite the larger body, the drag coefficient has improved from 0.33 to 0.30 thanks to active air flaps and a reworked spoiler
• Eight exterior colours are offered, including five new ones such as Redrock Orange Matte and Goyo Copper Pearl

The interior has been rebuilt from the ground up, and the old dual-screen layout is gone.

Hyundai also skipped any mention of the older naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine during the reveal, which suggests the brand is pushing turbocharged and hybrid power as the default going forward.

The new Tucson picks up a genuinely useful set of safety firsts for the segment.

• An emergency power door unlock system that keeps doors operable on backup power even if the main electrical system is cut after a crash
• Pedal-misuse safety assist that limits acceleration and applies the brakes automatically if the driver hits the accelerator instead of the brake
