Volvo XC70 Revealed in China, Could Arrive in the UAE

Volvo has officially reintroduced the XC70, this time as a modern plug-in hybrid crossover. The car has been unveiled in China and is expected to spark interest in the Middle East, especially the UAE, where Volvo has a loyal following.

The all-new XC70 promises a mix of design, sustainability, and technology, while reviving a name that carries strong recognition.

Design and Dimensions

Built on Volvo’s new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA), the XC70 stretches 4.815 meters, placing it in the same class as the Mercedes-Benz GLC.

The exterior borrows styling cues from the EX90, with a covered fascia featuring Volvo’s trademark ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED daytime running lights and new Matrix LED headlights.

The crossover’s profile is clean with curved wheel arches, frameless doors, and flush handles. Buyers can choose between 19-inch and 21-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels. At the rear, vertically aligned LED taillights and a slightly raked roofline create a balanced and premium look.

Interior and Comfort

On the inside, Volvo has opted for a minimalist and sustainable layout. The cabin features recycled leather upholstery and eco-friendly trim materials. Thanks to the flat floor design of the SMA platform, rear passengers benefit from more space and comfort.

Cargo space stands at 408 litres, expandable to 1,456 litres when the rear seats are folded. The double-decker dashboard houses two displays: a 12.3-inch driver console and a 15.4-inch infotainment screen.

Features and Technology

The XC70 is equipped with a long list of modern features, including:

• Tri-zone climate control.
• Dual-pane panoramic sunroof.
• Wireless charging and ambient lighting.
• Haptic touch controls and ventilated seats with memory function.

These additions make the crossover competitive with other luxury models in its segment.

Engine and Range

Volvo has yet to confirm exact engine specifications, but reports suggest the XC70 will use a 1.5-litre three-cylinder range extender engine producing 161 bhp. Two battery options will be available.

The 21.2 kWh battery powers a front-wheel-drive setup delivering 314 bhp and an EV-only range of 116 km, with 0-100 km/h achieved in 8 seconds.

Meanwhile, the larger 39.6 kWh pack enables an all-wheel-drive configuration with 456 bhp, a 200+ km EV-only range, and a quicker 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.3 seconds. With the combined setup, the total driving range extends beyond 1,200 km.

UAE Launch, Price and Our Verdict

At present, Volvo has confirmed the XC70 as a China-specific model. However, the company is exploring other markets. If launched in the UAE, pricing is expected to start at around AED 260,000.

The return of the XC70 signals Volvo’s intent to strengthen its position against rising Chinese brands. As the company’s first extended-range electric vehicle (EREV), the model lays the foundation for future offerings. With a long driving range, modern styling, and luxury-focused cabin, the XC70 could be an appealing choice for UAE buyers if it makes its way to the region.
