ABU DHABI: Volkswagen's Wolfsburg factory celebrates a major milestone, marking 50 years of producing the beloved Golf car. To mark this achievement, the brand hosted a special event called "50 Years of Golf Production." 

At the event, workers showcased a special Golf car covered in pictures of themselves. This car will join the factory's collection and has been released to honour the teamwork and dedication involved in manufacturing the Golf over the years.

Volkswagen started Golf’s series production on March 29th, exactly fifty years ago, in Wolfsburg. Back then, nobody had an idea that this compact car, which succeeded the iconic Beetle, would become the most successful Volkswagen model. Since its debut in 1974, over 37 million units have been produced which equates to over 2,000 new Golf purchases every single day globally over the past five decades.

Volkswagen transitioned to the Golf in July 1974 from the iconic Beetle, making a huge jump to front-mounted transverse engines. Giorgio Giugiaro designed the first Golf and it surpassed expectations in a short time. By October 1976, one million units of Golf were produced. 

Praised for its safety and reliability, the enduring success of Golf is evident with over 20 million units produced in Wolfsburg alone, and worldwide production exceeding 37 million units.

Closer to home, the Volkswagen Golf is available in the Golf R and Golf GTI iterations.
