Tesla hits 5 million EVs milestone with Shanghai Model 3 production

ABU DHABI: Tesla's global expansion of electric vehicles is pacing up. On September 17, 2023, the company announced via its X (formerly Twitter) page that it had achieved another milestone by producing its 5 millionth EV. Pearl White Model 3 Highland is the 5th millionth Tesla electric vehicle. It has been manufactured in China in the Shanghai Gigafactory.

Founded in 2003, Tesla took five years to sell and produce its first-ever EV – the Roadster. And since electric vehicle adoption was very slow at that time, Tesla took almost 17 years to produce its one-millionth vehicle.

But after that, the production growth of Tesla skyrocketed. The company produced the 2 millionth Tesla EV within 18 months, the third millionth within 11 months, and the 4 millionth EV in March 2023. The milestone aims to strengthen the blueprint of Tesla for an eco-friendly future.

Presently, Tesla has four vehicle production facilities globally. Two are within the United States: one in Austin, Texas (established in 2022) and another in Fremont, California (opened in 2010). Texas is the largest factory of Tesla. Apart from the US, Tesla has Gigafactories in Berlin, Germany, Shanghai, and China. 

In addition to accomplishing the five millionth vehicle production milestone, Tesla also opened its 50,000th supercharger last week in Roseville, California. It's estimated that in the early months of 2024, the company will reach the 6 millionth vehicle mark.
