Porsche planning to make a 911 SUV

ABU DHABI: Following the success of Cayenne, Porsche is planning to come up with a 911 SUV. It will strengthen the presence of the sportscar maker, Porshe, in the SUV market. However, purists believe that the German carmaker might be depleting its brand value by making SUVs.

The buyers, however, have taken the automaker’s step positively, which is evident from the fact that the Cayenne has already gained success worldwide. Porsche is thinking of making another offering in the SUV market, which could eventually be a 911 SUV or crossover.

Member of Executive Board for Sales and Marketing, Mr Detlev von Platen, spoke to the media at the Los Angeles Motor Show 2018 and said that the 911 takes the centre point of all the designs of Porsche. And in the near future, the carmaker is quite certain to make a 911 SUV. However, that will not be a model range and could be offered in limited numbers.

The 911 is a signature design of the brand Porsche. But, the German automaker has only used 911 as an inspiration for other vehicles by taking styling cues from it. However, things might change in the near future if Porsche makes a cranked-up 911, like the 911 Safari edition rally cars, or the 959 Paris Dakar racer. The 959 Paris Dakar racer belongs to 1980 and features an all-wheel-drive system along with the adjustable suspension. In the East African Safari Classic Rally, which was held in 1978, Porsche was the only brand whose cars - both the 911 SC 3.0 and the 959 Paris Dakar racer crossed the finish line.

So, if things go as intended and the 911 SUV makes its way to the production line, it will be pretty interesting to see whether the automaker uses the 911 moniker in the car or not.
