Changan UNI-T

Cabin

The cabin is pretty functional and also packed with a great deal of tech, something most buyers in this segment are quite picky about. The cockpit has a dual 10.3-inch screen dominating the dashboard, one handling the digital instrument cluster and the other one running the infotainment system with Apple CarPlay connectivity.

Quite evidently, the overall layout leans toward a driver-focused cockpit feel rather than a single wide display shared across both roles. The soft-touch materials cover the dashboard and door tops, with a leather-wrapped steering wheel carrying the main audio and cruise controls within easy reach.

Interestingly, for good reason, a row of physical shortcut buttons is placed beneath the infotainment screen for climate and drive mode changes; these are useful when a quick adjustment shouldn't need a trip through an on-screen menu. For entertainment, six-speaker audio handles everyday listening without needing an upgraded system to sound reasonably full in the cabin.

Front Seat

• Leather upholstery is standard on both variants
• 6-way power adjustment for the driver, 4-way power adjustment for the passenger
• Ventilated front seats on both Limited and Sport
• Memory function not offered, one area where pricier rivals still hold an edge

Ventilated seats are standard from the entry Limited trim, which is a good convenience given how hot the UAE leather gets after a car has sat in the direct sun.

Rear Seat

• Bench seating for three across both variants
• Adequate legroom for adults on city and short highway trips
• Rear seat headrests fitted as standard
• Rear air conditioning vents built into the centre console
• 60:40 split-folding rear seatback for longer items

Rear space is just decent, certainly not the best in the segment. This could be a reasonable trade-off given how much of the UNI-T's design effort clearly went into the coupe-like roofline up top. The two adults will find the outer seats comfortable enough for a trip between emirates, although headroom shrinks noticeably for anyone above average height given how far the roofline tapers toward the rear glass.

Climate Control

• Automatic climate control with dedicated rear vents on both variants
• Ambient interior lighting running through the cabin after dark
• Cool box built into the front console for chilled drinks and snacks

The cool box is an unusual inclusion at this price point, useful for keeping drinks cold on a long desert drive without leaning entirely on the cabin's own air conditioning to do it.

Storage

• Front console cool box doubling as extra storage
• Door pockets sized for bottles on both rows
• Centre console armrest bin beneath the wireless charging pad
• Glovebox sized for documents and smaller items
• Door bins on both rows, sized for a bottle or a phone

Once you are in the cabin, you quickly get the feeling that storage is practical, with the cool box again standing out as the one distinctly different touch most rivals at this price don't offer. Everyday items like sunglasses, a wallet, and keys all have an obvious spot within easy reach of the driver's seat.

Charging

• Wireless phone charger built into the centre console
• USB ports fitted at both the front and rear
• 58-litre fuel tank supporting longer regional trips between fill-ups

Charging provision covers a family's everyday needs without requiring an accessory dock or a separate rear charging pack, the wireless pad's placement keeps a phone visible rather than buried out of sight.

Boot Space

The UNI-T's boot space is around 450 litres, which is fine for the segment. The coupe-like roofline does trim usable height toward the rear of the load area slightly, though the boot opening itself is wide enough for larger bags without awkward angling. A flat load floor makes sliding in flatter items like a folded stroller, is straightforward, and the 60:40 split rear seatback provides extra room for longer items when needed.

Changan backs the UNI-T with six airbags covering the driver, passenger, side, and curtain positions, which are standard across both variants rather than reserved for Sport.

• 360-degree camera system with front and rear parking sensors
• Integrated Adaptive Cruise Control that holds a steady following distance
• Autonomous emergency braking paired with front collision warning
• Pedestrian early assisted braking for busier urban streets
• Lane departure warning and a blind spot indicator system
• Autopark function that handles parallel and perpendicular spaces
• Remote parking via the key fob for spots too tight to get into comfortably
• ABS, EBD, ESP, brake assist, and traction control are working together
• Hill hold and hill descent control for steeper inclines
• An E-Call emergency function, built into the safety suite

As you can see, like most Chinese brands, the list runs deeper than what most rivals offer, even on a range-topping trim, which is standard here from the entry Limited variant onwards. Pairing the adaptive cruise system with the lane-keeping features makes longer highway stretches noticeably less tiring, reducing the small steering corrections that would otherwise accumulate over a two-hour drive.

Front

A wide, mostly closed grille is positioned below sharp LED matrix-style headlights that switch on automatically as light fades. The bonnet carries a shallow crease running toward the windscreen, and the lower bumper's intake is finished in gloss black rather than chrome. This keeps the front end looking purposeful and not fussy.

The LED daytime running lights trace a thin line beneath the main headlight cluster, giving the face a distinct signature even at a glance. A narrow slit on either side of the intake feeds air toward the front brakes, a functional detail rather than a purely decorative one.

Side Profile

The roofline drops gradually from the windscreen toward the rear, the defining trait that gives the UNI-T its coupe-SUV description rather than a boxier crossover shape.

The hidden door handles rest flush with the body until touched; this feature cleans up the side view, and, according to Changan, the trim drag is slightly too. The power-adjustable, heated door mirrors fold electrically and carry integrated LED turn signals on both variants.

Short overhangs at each end keep the wheelbase looking long relative to the body, reinforcing the coupe-like proportions the side profile is built around.

Alloy Wheels

Both Limited and Sport are offered with 20-inch alloy wheels and 245/45 R20 tyres. This size is actually chosen to fill out the wheel arches and back up the coupe-SUV styling with a planted stance.

Rear

Behind you, you can see a distinctive V-shaped spoiler mounted above the rear windscreen, clearly one of UNI-T's more recognisable design cues and a clear break from the plain roof spoilers most compact SUVs use. The dual chrome exhaust trims are set on either side of the rear bumper. A full-width LED taillight connects across the tailgate for a wide, planted look after dark. The rear bumper carries a body-coloured lower section and not a contrasting skid plate, keeping the back end visually cleaner than most rivals in this class.

Colors

• Midnight Black
• Platinum White
• Sky Blue
• Space Blue
• Andes Grey
• Putty Grey

Six exterior colours are offered across both variants, from practical black and white through to sky blue and space blue, if you want the UNI-T's futuristic styling to carry through to the paint job too.

City Performance

• Weaving through Karama's tighter side streets, the dual-clutch gearbox shifts quickly enough that hesitation off the line is rarely an issue.
• Sport's Launch Control turns a green light on an empty stretch of Al Khail Road into a genuinely quick getaway, though it's more novelty than daily necessity.
• Autopark handles a tight bay outside a Deira apartment block competently, taking its own unhurried time to line up before committing.
• With Apple CarPlay running, navigation prompts stay visible on the larger of the two screens without disrupting the digital instrument cluster behind the wheel.

Highway Performance

• Joining the E311 from a slip road near Dubai Investment Park, the turbo pulls cleanly enough that merging never feels like a struggle against faster traffic.
• On the long, largely empty stretch past Dubai Investment Park toward Sharjah, Integrated Adaptive Cruise Control settles into a following gap and barely needs correcting for several kilometres.
• The tall roofline lets in a faint whistle around the panoramic sunroof seals once speeds pass 120 km/h, a small reminder that this is a raised body rather than a low sedan.
• The 58-litre tank covers a round trip to Al Ain without needing a fuel stop along the way.

Ride and Handling

• Speed bumps inside a Mirdif community barely upset the cabin, the suspension quietly ironing out the worst of the jolt before it reaches the seats.
• Steering weight stays light enough for tight mall parking ramps, then firms up noticeably once speeds climb past city limits.
• Through the gentler bends on the way toward Hatta, the tall body leans a bit more than the coupe-like roofline visually promises.
• Braking bite ramps up smoothly rather than grabbing hard, giving a composed stop when someone brakes sharply ahead on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road.

Right now, two variants of the UNI-T are on sale in the UAE. Not too tricky and pretty straightforward when choosing one, because the powertrain is the same between them.

Limited

The entry point into the UNI-T range gets the same 1.5-litre turbo engine, the full driver-assist suite, dual screens, and the cool box already fitted, for buyers who want everything the UNI-T's design and tech list offers without paying for Launch Control they may never use.

Sport

Mechanically and in terms of equipment, the Sport is almost identical to the Limited, but it adds Launch Control for a sharper standing start.

Zigwheels Recommendation

The Limited variant is the right choice when selecting the car; it comes with essentially the same engine, safety suite, and cabin technology as the Sport without the Launch Control premium.

The UNI-T's real deal is not necessarily the performance or real practicality; it is actually standing out while still getting a well-equipped cabin for the money. This is a standard strategy by most Chinese brands: offer a lot in any segment at a much more attractive price. Changan is doing the same here.

Features like hidden door handles, a V-shaped rear spoiler, and dual digital screens give it a presence that plainer compact SUVs in this price range hardly match. This one step further is the safety suite, which honestly runs deeper than buyers might expect from a newer brand.

But there are things that UNI-T doesn't yet have, like the resale history of a Tucson or a RAV4, and so that changes the story.

But price, features, style, and performance are certainly worth paying attention to. And for those purposes, anyone in this segment looking for a new car should sure gives a chance to the UNI-T; it really deserves it.
