New Porsche Taycan takes 17-second lead over Tesla Model S Plaid in Nurburgring run

ABU DHABI: The Porsche Taycan will get a new flagship variant that will most likely be called the Turbo GT. But before that, the upcoming car is being tested at Germany’s Nurburgring Nordschleife. 

The new high-performance variant of the Porsche Taycan has set a record around the Nurburgring. It has set a lap time of around 7:07.55 making it the quickest electric Porsche to show its driving prowess and speed around the legendary track. With this, it also broke the Tesla Model S Plaid's previous record of 7:25.231 time by approximately 17.681 seconds.

The upcoming top-tier version of Taycan set a lap time that is around 26 seconds quicker than the latest generation Taycan Turbo S and close to the 7:05.298 lap time of Rimac Nevera at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. 

The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT will sit at the top of the Taycan lineup when it arrives as a part of the mid-life refresh of the model. It is estimated that the next-gen Taycan will arrive in 2027. As per Porsche insiders, it may produce close to 1,000hp to compete with the Model S Plaid. 

It has not been disclosed if this model will come with a new battery, but a change in cell design or chemistry may be required to support long bursts of high current in a better way if the Taycan Turbo S pack falls short in this department.
