Eighth-Generation BMW 3 Series Adds Fully Electric i3, Keeps Six-Cylinder M350

Dubai: BMW has revealed its eighth-generation 3 Series, moving the compact executive sedan into its Neue Klasse era. The range now includes the first fully electric BMW i3, sharing its platform with petrol models that now feature 48V mild-hybrid technology. It’s a significant shift for one of the brand’s core models.

Neue Klasse Design and Platform

The biggest change is the move to BMW's Neue Klasse design and technology. For the first time, the electric and combustion-powered models share the same overall styling. The new shape features a longer wheelbase and short overhangs, giving it a familiar but modern stance.

The All-Electric i3

The headline news is the BMW i3, the first fully electric 3 Series based on the Neue Klasse architecture. Two all-wheel drive versions will be available from launch. The top i3 50 xDrive produces 469 hp from its dual motors and uses a 108.7 kWh battery, giving it a WLTP range of up to 912 km. It also supports 400 kW DC fast charging. A second model, the i3 40 xDrive, offers 374 hp and a range of up to 710 km.

Petrol and Hybrid Powertrains

However, BMW isn’t moving the entire 3 Series range to electric power just yet. Petrol models continue, now with 48V mild-hybrid technology. The flagship is the M350 xDrive, which has a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine producing 443 hp. It can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. Two four-cylinder petrol variants also join the range, and a plug-in hybrid model is planned for the coming year.

New Cabin and Infotainment

The cabin receives a complete digital overhaul, centred around the new BMW Panoramic iDrive system. Information is projected across the bottom of the windscreen by the BMW Panoramic Vision display. This is paired with a large 17.9-inch Central Display and an optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display. The system runs on BMW Operating System X and integrates both the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and Amazon Alexa+.

Driver Assistance Systems

An extensive range of standard and optional assistance systems is offered, including functions rated at SAE Level 2. The Motorway Assistant allows for hands-free driving at speeds up to 130 km/h in supported markets, though local availability for these features is yet to be confirmed. The systems are an expansion over those in the previous generation.
