Genesis G70 Expert Review

One of the newest brands in the world of luxury motoring, Genesis might not be a strong name, but the manufacturer needs to be taken seriously. And the best proof of that is its range starting model, the G70. Launched to pick up the pace against the range starting models of bigwigs like Audi, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Jaguar and Volvo, the Genesis G70 might not have a strong brand name against the aforementioned names. However, when it comes to judging it as a product, it is nowhere lacking against its European rivals in terms of design and technology. The Genesis G70 is available in UAE with two petrol engine options – while the smaller 2.0-litre petrol is available in Premium and Prestige variants, the bigger 3.3-litre petrol is offered in Royal Sport, Platinum and Prestige variants. Color options on offer for the Genesis G70 are Blazing Red, Marble White, Royal Blue, Platinum Silver, Carbon Metal, Titanium Black, Lapis Blue, Umbar Brown, Graceful Grey and Racing Grey.

Interior

The Genesis G70 might not feel special on the outside with its tad too simple exteriors for a luxury car. However, step on the inside, and you will instantly blow praises for the car’s luxurious appeal. One does get a total of six interior trim options – Obsidian Black one tone, Black with sandstorm gray two-tone, dark green with vanilla beige two-tone, sport gray with sport red, velvet burgundy with obsidian black two tone and black with tobacco brown two tones, with the options of natural or Nappa leather upholsteries.

The three-spoke steering wheel with ovular center boss and silver bits look different, and has a plush feel while holding. The car has a nice and limited usage of real aluminium on the doors, around instrument console and the center console, which uplifts the overall ambience of the car. The slanted center console with horizontal AC vents, round buttons for automatic climate control and pop-up style touchscreen infotainment unit above it too look quite unique and premium.

The Genesis G70 is quite loaded for a premium car, as it comes with interior features such as leather upholstery, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, quilted seats, wireless charging, Lexicon music system with 15 speakers, 8-way powered front seats with memory, heating and cooling functions, paddle shifters and rear AC vents. However, for a premium luxury car, the G70 could have been equipped with more prominent and standout features to boast of.

Exterior

In comparison to its European rivals, the Genesis G70 might not have a strong visual presence, for the overall styling is quite sober and subtle, but not flashy. However, one can’t go wrong with the looks of the Genesis, for it is not a poorly designed car, but has a touch of premium appeal to it.

At the front, things have been kept very simple, with the Genesis G70 getting a large open-mouth like chrome grille which we have seen in recent new generation range-topping Hyundai models. The headlamps are shaped like eye-lashes and do get LED projectors and daytime running LEDs to go with the trend.  However, the main highlight of the front profile has to be the busy design for the front bumper, which gets too many prominent creases and upper skirting to make sure the design doesn’t miss out on sportiness.

From the side, the Genesis G70 might miss out on first glance for its simplicity, however, the overall design stays aerodynamic and curvy. There is nothing much new or distinct in its side profile, however, the long wheelbase and chrome garnish on the shoulderline do make it look premium.

At the rear, the Genesis G70 seems to have taken a leaf from the book of Mercedes Benz, with the tail lights appearing to be slightly tweaked version of that of the C-Class. However, the noticeable kink towards the inner edges adjacent to the bootlid line give it is own identity and saves from plagiarism. The lower portion of the rear bumper with silver finish and twin ovular exhaust pipe ends look cool.

Ride & Handling

The Hyundai Genesis comes underpinned with an electronically controlled suspension setup of MacPherson struts with multi-link at the front and a multi-link suspension at the rear. The presence of all wheel drive system and plush and soft setting for the suspension setup makes the overall driving experience brisk and comfortable at the same time.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

The Genesis G70 can be had in two engine options, both of which are petrol powered. The smaller engine is a 2.0 liter four cylinder motor, which produces a maximum power output of 252 PS and a maximum torque output of 353 Nm. On the other hand, the bigger 3.3 liter V6 petrol motor generates 370 PS of maximum power and 510 Nm of maximum torque. Both the engines are mated to a standard 8-speed automatic transmission, which gets further assistance of shift-by-wire technology

Braking & Safety

For an entry-level luxury car, the Genesis G70 is quite loaded with some very impressive safety features. The car does try to impress you with its safety kit which includes front, side, knee and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, electronic stability program, driver attention warning system, blind spot collision warning, lane keeping assist, smart cruise control with stop and go, forward collision avoidance assist, dynamic low beam assist, high beam assist, heads-up display, parking distance warning and around view monitor.

Verdict

For a luxury vehicle, the Genesis G70 is quite understated from the way it looks, for the overall exterior design might not generate the wow factor at first. However, while the overall design might take some time to grow on you, you will feel pampered by the way it feels on the inside. Adding to it, the performance from both the engines feels sporty but not too over-thrilling, while the overall suspension is plush and soft enough to make you feel comfortable at all speeds. All-in-all, the Genesis G70 might not give you the feels of a proper luxury car in terms of visual and brand appeals, but then, it has everything which a luxury car has to offer, in terms of cabin design, quality and features.
