Volvo Unveils XC70: Its Longest-Range Plug-In Hybrid Yet

Volvo Cars is set to enter a new era of electrification with the upcoming launch of the Volvo XC70. This mid-size SUV is its first-ever extended-range plug-in hybrid and boasts an electric driving range of up to 200 kilometres.

Built to cater primarily to the Chinese market, the XC70 blends long-range EV capabilities with the practicality of combustion engines for longer journeys.

Extended Range, Flexible Power

The XC70 is engineered on Volvo's new SMA platform, which supports extended-range plug-in hybrid powertrains. This gives it the ability to run on electricity alone for everyday city travel, while the petrol engine kicks in for longer trips.

It ensures a balance between efficiency and freedom. "It enables us to maintain and develop a balanced product portfolio, while offering a highly attractive alternative to customers who are not yet ready for fully electric cars," said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars.

Designed for the Chinese Market

Targeted initially at China, where demand for longer-range hybrids is growing, the XC70 will be available for order later in the year. Volvo Cars has not confirmed if or when it will reach other global markets, including the UAE, but has hinted at exploring additional launches.

Modern Looks, Scandinavian Roots

The XC70 carries Volvo’s new design language rooted in Scandinavian simplicity. Its tall and powerful profile is enhanced by a sculpted shoulder and sweeping roofline, lending the SUV a dynamic yet solid silhouette. 

At the front, a closed shield-like grille, taken from Volvo's EV line-up, is fitted with an active grille shutter that improves aerodynamics and cabin climate. The new Thor’s Hammer headlights have been updated and feature Matrix LED tech for smarter illumination.
