Porsche introduces new 911 hybrid with 541hp

ABU DHABI: Porsche has given a modern touch to the iconic 911 by updating the engine of the base 911 Carrera and implementing design enhancements that maintain the distinctiveness of the 992-generation model. However, the standout feature is the introduction of an all-new hybrid powertrain in the 911 Carrera GTS, marking the first hybrid 911 in Porsche's history.

The most notable addition is the hybrid petrol-electric system. This setup includes a new 3.6-litre six-cylinder turbocharged boxer engine, a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery, and a gearbox-mounted electric motor. The 911 Carrera GTS delivers a total output of 532 bhp at 6500 rpm and generates 610 Nm of torque from 1950 to 6000 rpm, matching the power of the 991 Turbo.

The Carrera GTS takes 2.9 seconds to achieve 0-60 mph, hitting 194 mph top speed. It sets a 7:16.93, 8.7 seconds blazing 'Ring lap time which makes it faster than its predecessor, equipped with a 53 bhp electric motor and a 478 bhp 3.6-litre engine. It weighs over 3500 lbs and comes with a two-seat setup and an option for a four-seat configuration free of cost.

The T-Hybrid system integrates a BorgWarner turbocharger that features an energy recuperation system, similar to the racer's setup of 919, harvesting kinetic energy up to 11kW. With the new turbo and brake regen, the T-Hybrid system comes with a compact 1.9kWh battery that eliminates the requirement for external charging.

The flat-six engine generates 485hp and a ZF electric motor has been integrated into its gearbox, producing 610 Nm of torque. Packaging the inverter and battery leads to a reduction in fuel tank size by 6 litres and relocates the 12V lithium-ion battery beneath the rear seat.

The rear-driven Carrera GTS will be introduced with the T-Hybrid system, with Porsche providing some hint about the four-wheel drive variants' future compatibility like the Carrera 4 and 911 Turbo.

Porsche has enhanced the aerodynamic efficiency of the 911 with active front air ducts, while ultrasonic sensors and radar have been integrated into the front bumper. The changes that have been made to the rear include a redesigned spoiler, OLED taillights, and a diffuser.
