2026 Mazda CX-5 First Impressions – Upscale Styling and Upgraded Interiors

Abu Dhabi : The launch of the new CX-5 also hints at future Mazda models.

Mazda is giving its popular CX-5 a complete redesign for the 2026 model year. The new version features updated styling, better technology, and a noticeably larger interior. Responding to customer feedback, Mazda has stretched the 2026 CX-5 by more than four inches for more legroom and cargo space.

Mazda expects the 2026 CX-5 to be a strong seller. It is a key part of Mazda’s lineup and faces stiff competition from models like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Nissan Rogue. The powertrain in the 2026 model remains the same as in the current CX-5. A new hybrid model will join the line-up in 2027.

Revolutionary Design

The styling of the 2026 CX-5 is larger and impactful. 

• It comes with a bold new look that keeps Mazda’s signature style but adds modern touches. 
• The headlights are slimmer and now feature upgraded LED lighting.
• Mazda claims the front grille and bumper are broader and more sculpted. Black glossy trim surrounds the grille, lower bumper, wheel arches, and side skirts. This gives the SUV a rugged yet stylish appearance.
• At the back, Mazda has replaced the traditional emblem with the word 'Mazda' stretching across the tailgate. The tail lamps are darker and narrower, taking inspiration from the siblings CX-70 and CX-90. 
• The twin exhaust tips suggest Mazda still wants the CX-5 to feel sporty.
• The wheelbase has grown by around three inches. Also, the overall length of the vehicle is now 4.5 inches longer than before.

Significant Changes Inside

Most of the biggest updates are inside the car. 

• At the heart of the redesign is an optional 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment, the largest display Mazda has ever made. 
• The new infotainment system runs on Google built-in, offering a more user-friendly experience. It gives direct access to Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store without extra cost. 
• Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard features.
• A smaller 12.9-inch touchscreen will be the standard display. It is now placed closer to the driver, which is a shift from the current CX-5's screen. 
• The older screen sits higher on the dash and is controlled with a rotary dial, except when the vehicle is stopped, where touch inputs are limited.
• The interior design feels fresh, simple, and upscale. Along with the new touchscreen, the cabin has a smooth, two-tone colour scheme that adds a classy look.
• Mazda states the 2026 CX-5 will offer more knee and legroom for second-row passengers. This is thanks to a longer wheelbase.
• The steering wheel now has a flatter airbag cover and sleeker buttons for a cleaner, more modern look. 
• Old Mazda logos have been replaced with Mazda lettering, similar to what's on the back of the vehicle. 
• Another big update is the new fully digital instrument cluster. It is expected to come standard on all trims.

Retaining the old workhorse

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 will keep the same engine as the current model. It uses a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. According to the company, about 90 per cent of CX-5s sold have this engine paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox. It produces 187 hp and 251 Nm of torque, which is just 1.35 Nm less than the previous version.

All-wheel drive remains standard on every model. Mazda isn't offering the turbocharged engine that’s available on the current CX-5 yet. Instead, the company is working on its hybrid powertrain, which is expected to launch in 2027.

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 will hit showrooms in early 2026. Its hybrid version is expected to arrive the following year, in 2027. Mazda has made some smart updates to keep the CX-5 attractive to buyers.
