Toyota Yaris Hatchback or Yaris Sedan: Which one to buy?

Design and Looks

The latest-gen Toyota Yaris Hatchback and Yaris Sedan are like two sides of the same coin. They’ve been carved out from the same stone, and hence, there are a host of similarities in their design and looks.
The biggest striking feature of the Yaris is the design of its front end. Its huge and stylish headlights provide a much larger appearance. Its large and black front bumper compliments the large size of the headlights. And, of course, the Toyota logo sits right at the centre.
If we move from the front towards the rear of the Yaris, we’ll find that the design of both the Yaris Hatchback and Yaris Sedan are very similar till the end of the rear door. From here the changes begin. The C-pillar is different, and so is the rear end. While the Yaris Hatchback gets a funky-looking tail lamp cluster, the Sedan holds a much elegant design of the same.

Interiors

If we talk in terms of aesthetics, then the interior of both the Yaris Hatchback and Yaris Sedan is more or less the same. What differs is the amount of space you get. Obviously, the Yaris Sedan is larger in dimensions than its Hatchback variant, and hence, it has that much
more space, specifically in the boot.

Engine Options and Fuel Economy

The Toyota Yaris Hatchback comes with two engine options. The first one is a 1.3-liter, inline 4-cylinder engine that churns out 98 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, and generates 123 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. This is available with the base model (SE). It has a claimed fuel economy of 18.7 KM/L. The other engine is a 1.5-liter unit that produces 106 bhp of power at 6,000 rpm, and 140 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. As per the spec sheet, this could do 19.5
km to a litre. It comes with the higher-end model (SE+).

On the other hand, the Yaris Sedan is available in only a single engine option - the 1.5-Litre unit. Considering the larger dimensions and increased weight of the sedan, it makes sense to incorporate the more powerful engine on this car. Toyota claims that even after having a bit of extra fat, the Yaris Sedan would give a fuel economy of 20 kmpl.

Features

The Yaris Hatchback and Yaris Sedan come with a host of safety features like Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Dual Front Airbags, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), Tyre Pressure Warning System (TPWS), and Vehicle Stability Control
(VSC). The good thing is that all these features come as standard on both types of cars. So, even if you go with the basic variant of the sedan or the hatchback, you’ll still get the necessary safety features.

Other features which are available with the higher-end model of both the cars include 4.2-inch TFT display, push start stop button, steering mounted controls, projector halogen headlamps, smart keyless entry, and so on.

Price

Toyota has priced the Yaris Hatchback perfectly. It starts from AED 58,700 and goes up to AED 68,200 for the SE+ variant. If we consider the Yaris Sedan, the base model (SE) is priced at AED 59,900, whereas its higher-end model, the SE+ gets a tag of AED 79,900.

Conclusion

We can’t deny the fact that both the Yaris Hatchback and Yaris Sedan are a steal for their prices. The Yaris Hatchback ticks various checkboxes to qualify as an astonishing family car which is easily manoeuvrable in city traffic and does not have a huge impact on one’s bank balance.

The Yaris Sedan, too, is equally good and competitive in its segment. It is perfect for people looking for a sedan with a host of features, and a bit of an extra boot space, at an affordable
