Recent Updates of Hiace

Toyota Hiace is one of those cars, which do not require any sort of introduction. This car was first introduced in 1967 and now it has entered its sixth generation with the new 2019 Toyota Hiace. This sixth generation is now offered in three body styles, the standard regular roof, cargo van, and the high roof commuter. The high roof comes with a plethora of seating options and can easily accommodate 17 passengers. Coming to the engine, it comes with an extremely powerful 3.5L V6 motor in UAE, which can produce a maximum power of 277 hp. While in other markets like Saudi Arabia, a 2.8L four-cylinder turbo diesel engine with 174 hp is available. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic on the Highlander variant. The 2019 Toyota Hiace is already up on sale in UAE, Saudi Arabia, and other GCC countries.

Overview

Transportation plays a vital role in our lives, directly or indirectly, and so does time. We can’t ignore their importance or just consider them as an inconsequential part of today’s world. So, to provide you with an easy way of transportation, Toyota has got its Hiace.

Toyota Hiace is an MPV or a van that has been designed with a sole purpose of transporting a large number of people and/or goods at a time. And hence, there are many Toyota Hiace variants; you can get a 3-seater, a 6-seater, or even a 13-seater model.

The Toyota Hiace price has got a wide range. It starts at AED 95,500 and goes all the way up to AED 139,500. Of course, it will depend on the variant you buy. However, irrespective of the variant, the engine on all of them is the same - a 2.7-litre 4-cylinder Dual VVT-i engine. You do get an option of going with either the 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Interior & Features

The interior of the Toyota Hiace is similar to the exterior - as in it is also very simple. Since it’s a van, it’s got a handle on the A-pillar to help you get in easily. Once seated on the driver’s seat, you will notice that the view up ahead is wide and clear. The 5-spoke steering wheel is manually adjustable for tilt. Behind it is a basic meter cluster. The dashboard has a clean design and layout. The gear lever is an integral part of the dashboard and hence, there is a free space between the two front seats.

The doors have got bottle holders. You can find a couple of cup holders on the dashboard as well. The entertainment system supports AM/FM/CD/AUX/USB. Below it is the controls for the manual air conditioning. There is also a storage space under the glove box.

The Hiace is a long vehicle. It measures 5380 mm in length. Toyota offers many variants of the Hiace. And depending on the variant you pick, the interior layout differs after the front two seats. For example, the 13-seater commuter variant gets roof mounted air-con vents for all the rows. You can get inside the van via the right side sliding door. The entry is sufficiently wide and getting in and out shouldn’t be an issue. The feet room on all the rows is decent. There will be 4 rows laid out in the back. The first two has only two seats whereas the others follow 1+2 fashion. Mind you, the 4 rows are excluding the front two seats. If you got for the 3-seater, then you get the entire rear section of the van empty for carrying cargo.

Exterior

The exterior of the Toyota Hiace is nothing that would turn heads. Well, people might look at it twice but that won’t be because of the way it looks but more because of its dimensions. The Hiace is a van and it looks like one. The front fascia features a pair of large headlamps that are connected together with a big chrome grille that extends a bit to cover the top portion of the front bumper. Above the grille at the centre sits the Toyota badge.

Moving towards the side, the Hiace has got a wide character line that runs along the length of the MPV. It keeps the otherwise plain and simple view a bit interesting. The wheel arches have got indentations and add a bit of liveliness to the vehicle. The alloy wheels have got a decent design. The roofline of the Hiace curves from the front and runs straight till the rear where it drops almost vertically.

The rear end of the Toyota Hiace is as simple as it gets. There’s a pair of small vertical tail lights. Toyota has also added a roof mounted brake light for extra visibility. Below the windscreen is the brand’s logo. Moving a bit more towards the ground you get to see a horizontal chrome embellishment. On either side of this are the letterings for the car name and variant.

Ride & Handling

The suspension setup on the Hiace consists of double wishbone at the front and rigid leaf spring at the rear. This setup remains constant across all the variants. It has been tuned to provide an optimal ride quality to the passengers if it’s a commuter van or makes sure the cargo doesn’t bounce around when being used as a transport van.

The Hiace is an MPV or a van and it should be driven around like that only. It isn’t meant for killing corners and setting up new lap records. The Hiace performs brilliantly if it is being used for what it’s meant for in the first place.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

When it comes to the engine, the Toyota Hiace spec sheet for all the variants shows a single engine type - a 2.7-litre 4-cylinder engine that has been tuned to produce a max power of 149 hp at 4800 revs and generates 240 Nm of peak torque at 3800 revs. The transmission system gets two options - a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. The automatic model is available only in the commuter trim.

Toyota has opted for this engine because it believed that this 2.7-litre engine should be sufficient to move this large van without breaking a sweat irrespective of whether it’s carrying people or cargo.

Braking & Safety

To provide a good traction, the Toyota Hiace comes with a set of 195R15C size tyres. They provide the required amount of grip to not only help the Hiace stay upright while moving around curves but also be planted under hard braking. Toyota has also equipped the Hiace with Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) that aids in improving the braking performance of the vehicle.

Other safety features include brake assist, dual airbags, vehicle stability control, emergency stop signal, traction control, hill start assist control, tyre inflation pressure warning, and rear fog lamp.

Verdict

Looking at the Hiace would give you an impression that it’s just a piece of metal with a boxy structure. But it’s not. Toyota has done its own research and development in building this vehicle. Interestingly, the Hiace ticks off just the right boxes to be a successful commuter or transporting van. So, if you’ve got any such requirements, then the Hiace would help you fulfil them. You can pick from the 7 different Hiace color options.

    Best commercial vehicle around

The Toyota Hiace is the best commercial vehicle I could have chosen for my business. I got my hands on the Toyota gem recently, after it was given a revamp. And it must say the new model is a looker, it is incredibly stylish and rugged. The cabin feels nice and comfortable, and I really enjoy my time driving it. Read More
