Recent Updates of Renault Talisman

Talisman, by the French automaker, Renault, is a huge family car. This handsome-looking European car derives its power from a  2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine, which can produce a maximum power reading at 140 hp and churns out 193 Nm of torque. The major highlight of this car apart from its eye-catching exterior design is its myriad of safety features. The vehicle comes stuffed with ABS, VSC, active bonnet airbags, Anti-theft alarm, auto door lock, brake assist, EBD, hill assist, immobilizer, etc.

The car is quite tech-savvy and features audio controls on the steering wheel, six speakers, trip computer, multi-information display, Bluetooth connectivity, voice-operated control, MP3, USB, etc, to name a few. LED tail lights, auto halogen headlights and door mirror with turn signals add glamour to the Renault Talisman.

Overview

There are vehicles which are made as launch pads by manufacturers or some as revival tools. For example, if a manufacturer were floundering in a particular market, they will find alternatives or better still make an all-new product specific to the market. Or if it doesn't work, they simply pack their bags and leave. Renault has been one manufacturer that has a hard time picking its business in UAE. None of its cars cut the muster with the buying populace. Renault chose the harder path of bringing in fresh products and it seems that the French carmaker is now on a revival path. The Renault Talisman that you see here is no rebadged Samsung SM7 but in fact is an all-new product and is the company’s new flagship model. It sits above the Fluence, which has now been discontinued and perhaps a newer version is on its way. Back to the Talisman then. It is offered in two engine options here while the trims available are LE, SE, and PE, with the latter being the higher ranking one. So let’s see if the Talisman is actually what Renault claims it to be - a sporty saloon.

Interior & Features

The cabin of the Renault Talisman bears little resemblance to other products from the French car manufacturer. This means soft-touch materials all around and even on the door pads. If you were imagining the Duster or even the Symbol, then you will be in for a surprise. This Renault is one heavily loaded car and by this mean we mean in the features department. Head-up display, powered driver’s seat, auto headlights/wipers, dual zone climate control, tilt adjustable telescopic steering wheel that also has rear wheel steer function, heated front seats, rear aircon vents, 8.7-inch touchscreen infotainment that is tuned by Arkamys, panoramic sunroof, memory function for the door mirrors, rear glass sunblind, 4 ways electric massage for the driver, remote boot access, ambient lighting and many more.

While everything looks good and nice to touch, the build quality could have been better. Most of the stuff glued onto the lower part of the dashboard can easily be pried open with the bare hands. The infotainment system tablet is laid out exactly like the Volvo Sensus systems and has a logical approach to it but is devoid of modern-day gadgetry like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The touchscreen feels laggy to use and touch. More often than not, the driver has to peel his eyes off the road to ensure that whatever action he wanted from the screen has been achieved.

At 608 litres, the boot is huge and can also be accessed by waving your feet under the bumper.

Exterior

There is no better looking car in this segment. And this segment has some good looking cars like the Skoda Superb, Volkswagen Passat and the Hyundai Sonata. Renault’s chief designer for the Talisman is Laurens van der Acker. He has also worked with Volvo before and while the exterior of the car doesn’t really give away any Volvo elements, the interior does. We will come to that shortly. For now, the exterior just looks wow. There are the signature C-shaped LED rings inside the headlight enclosure. These merge well with the stripes on the upper part of the bumper. The lower part houses the comparatively small fog lights and a chrome strip below them. We also liked the pinched effect of the bonnet.

The elongated body resting on 19-inch alloys is coupled with a low roofline that ends up in the attractive-looking LED tail lights. The car measures 4,848 mm in length, 2,081 mm in width and 1,463 mm in height. The ground clearance stands at 145 mm. Renault gives you three trim options to choose from and the colours are Universe White, Solid White, Meissen Blue, Crimson Red, Mineral Beige, Metallic Black, Metallic Grey, and Ultra Silver.

Ride & Handling

Renault offers drive modes that ensure that the Talisman has the comfort associated with the brand. This is one good riding saloon and something we will wholeheartedly recommend if you are looking for a chauffeur driven car. The electronically controlled dampers provide a sophisticated ride quality and try as much, we couldn’t get it to upset the occupant’s comfort. The rear-wheel steer system has a flat-bottomed shape and initially feels a bit awkward to use too. However, you will definitely appreciate the way it makes light work of traffic, positively moving the rear of the car.

Handing isn’t the Talisman’s forte and while it will take on the daily driving chores, this isn’t something you will attack the race track with. NVH is also quite low and appreciable for a rear seat driven passenger saloon. The car also comes with Park Assist which basically detects an empty space and parks the car all by itself.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

As discussed, there are two petrol engines. One is a turbo unit whereas the other is a naturally aspirated powerhouse. The naturally aspirated 2.0-litre unit produces 138 PS of power and 198 Nm of torque. It is exclusively mated to a CVT. Renault claims that the 0-100 kmph is dispatched in 12.6 seconds whereas the top speed is closer to 180 kmph. The other smaller engine is a 1.6-litre turbocharged unit that makes 187 PS and 260 Nm of torque. This one gets a fairly sophisticated 7-speed dual clutch. At 7.7 seconds for the ton, the 1.6 is quick and reaches a top speed of 237 kmph. Renault claims that the turbo engine will return 17.87 kmpl on a daily driving basis. The engine is smart enough to understand that one is at a traffic signal and disconnects the gear from the running shaft to reduce economy losses.

Both the engines could do with more useable torque in the rev range. Because of the smarter dual clutch system, the lag isn’t as perceptible but then the CVT makes it worse.

Braking & Safety

The hood, as well as the bumper of the Talisman, have been designed to have minimum effect on pedestrians should one crash into them. Advanced traction control, Hill Start Assist, ESP and ABS with Emergency Braking Assist are available. In addition, there are front/rear parking sensors, Blind Spot Warning, Moving Object Detection and rear view camera. Renault also offers six airbags though knee airbags aren’t available.

Euro NCAP says that the safety shell of the Talisman is very good and have given it a full five stars.

Verdict

Renault’s claims don’t hold true of the Talisman. It isn’t a sporty car by any means. The engine is a willing partner but the chassis itself is tuned more for a comfortable ride. We quite appreciate the space on offer, ride quality, efficiency and the goodies all around. We would have liked a tad more torque lower down, slightly more reactive engine and a better music system both in sound and touch. Prices for the Renault Talisman start from AED 67,900 for the 2.0-litre and AED 82,900 for the 1.6-litre.

    Good stylish cars

The Renault Talisman has been more than a car to me since I purchased it a year ago, it has acted like a lucky charm for me and I literally think that the car contains some magical powers. It is gaining popularity as one of the most stylish cars in the segment because of the uber- cool exterior. When I Read More
