The Renault Symbol was introduced in the UAE in 2015, and recently in the year 2017, it received its first share of the long overdue update. Currently, the Symbol is one of the UAE's most affordable subcompact sedan that despite its low price gives tough competition to the rivals. In the list of its competitors feature - Mitsubishi Attrage, 2018 Hyundai Accent, and new Dzire. The Symbol is available with a single trim option that is powered by a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine generating 105 PS of power and 145 Nm of torque. You call a spade, a brick but it will still function the way it is supposed to. Similarly the Renault Symbol is a new generation Renault Logan or the Dacia Logan. Perhaps a few markets don’t like the name Logan and hence Renault had to change it for them. This is the only plausible explanation. However, we aren’t complaining. Why? Cue: the first line of this article. We had recently been to India and there we saw a local player Mahindra making the Verito sedan under license from Renault. The Verito is in fact the Renault Logan rebadged and with a slight facelift. The Renault Symbol is no different and is built on the same platform as the Duster SUV. What has changed from the Logan or let's say from the Verito are looks and interior features. Let’s elaborate the details in the sections below.

Interior & Features

If you have been in a Dacia cabin before, you will feel at home here too. The Renault Symbol though uses a slightly higher end texture to the upholstery. That being said, the plastics still are hard and will not give you the premium feel from other European or Japanese cars. Everything though is logically laid out and exactly where you think it should be. The instrument cluster will remind you of the one in the Duster but the digital read out next to it is new. The infotainment system is a touchscreen system complete with AUX, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. However, it lacks the support for Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. The seats are supportive with the driver’s perch featuring manual height adjuster. Everything seems well put together and given Logan’s record, nothing is going to fall off or rattle in the Symbol either.

There is also automatic climate control, rear AC vents, navigation, steering mounted audio controls and power adjustment for the ORVMs as well as for the windows. The rear bench is very comfortable and you will quickly understand why the Symbol is one preferred car for the taxi market here. It has got acres of head-, shoulder- and leg- room. The boot at 510 litres is also very useful and wide.

Palatable and a lot more appealing. Agreed there are far more beautiful cars around UAE, but the Symbol is waging a battle of its own. It has to shred the image which immigrants to Dubai have seen around the world, that of a utility and base vehicle. If we erase its history, you will still end up appreciating the way the car looks. The headlights are nicely shaped and have an LED outline to them. This lends it some character. The bumper, as well as grille design,n looks muscular too, with the rather big Renault logo sitting proudly in the middle. The wheels too have grown up to be now 185/60 R16s from the 14 inches available earlier. The wing mirrors now have the turn indicators embedded into them, a very nice touch indeed. At the rear, things have been kept simple and in a rounded profile rather than the slab sided approach earlier. The tail lights too have been given a C-shaped treatment but only in the inside panel.

There is no difference with the international models when it comes to the length, width and height parameters. These still are 4,354mm x 1,733mm x 1,529mm. The ride height is lowered at 145mm. There are nine colour options - Glacier White, Navy Blue, Cosmos Blue, Mercury, Flame Red, Pearl Black, Tourmaline Brown, Comet Grey and Mink Brown. Two trims are offered- SE and PE with the latter being  the top end.

Ride & Handling

The Renault Symbol, just like its Logan cousin, also uses McPherson with the wishbone in the front and H-type torsion beam with deflectors and coil springs at the back. While this setup is set on the slightly stiffer side here, due to the lack of potholes, it makes sense for our country. Globally, depending on the region where the car is exported to from Romania, the suspension is tuned accordingly. The Indian Mahindra Verito has got a slightly absorbing tune.

We liked the way the car handles the rough too. It isn’t hard to imagine that the capable Duster shares its chassis with the Symbol. The steering is a bit heavy but you get used to it pretty quick. The ride quality is also good and one will not even feel the occasional bump filtering into the cabin.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

Renault has stuck to the tried and tested 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that puts out 105 PS of power and 145 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission as standard. While we appreciate the convenience of an automatic, Renault could have definitely offered the slick 5-speed manual as an option. 0-100 kmph is done in 12s whereas the top speed is 185 kmph. The claimed fuel efficiency is 15.62 kmpl and we managed to get 13 kmpl at the best. The engine NVH is nicely maintained below speeds of 100kmph but rev it and you wish there was a bit more of sound deadening used.

Globally, there is also the 1.5-litre diesel that can be tuned to make 65 PS, 85 PS and 110 PS depending on the type of the turbocharger used. However, here, we don’t get too many diesel engines so it was proper that Renault skipped it.

Braking & Safety

Renault offers rear parking sensors only on the PE trim. As a standard, dual airbags along with EBD are offered. There is also ISOFIX child seat mounts available now. There have been no crash tests of the Symbol being conducted and hence it is kind of difficult to arrive at its crash worthiness yet.

The Renault Symbol is one of the most affordable options in its segment. Its competition includes good lookers like the Kia Rio, Honda City, Toyota Vios, Hyundai Accent and the Chevrolet Sonic. It is a basic utility vehicle with lots of space in the cabin and decent modern facilities too. The engine may not be the star of the lot here but gets its job done. The car is also well made. Prices start from AED 38,900 to 42,900. At this price, it is worth a look.

    A good choice

I had to upgrade my Sedan which I had been driving around for more than 8 years now. Hence, I was very antsy about my choice because it had to be very reliable and sturdy. There is too much of grained plastics around the cabin for my liking but the little elements of the silver trim break the monotony of Read More

This truck boasts of a great torque

While the French car manufacturer, Renault is not a very popular choice amongst many in the UAE; I decided to go for the Renault Symbol because I was looking for a rough sturdy model that was almost unbreakable. There is no car that is as strong and durable than the Renault Symbol as is demonstrated by Top Gear. This truck Read More
