Recent Updates of Mitsubishi Pajero

The Pajero stands out in Mitsubishi’s current portfolio as the only vehicle which has an illustrious history behind it. The full-size flagship SUV from Mitsubishi is globally known for its off-road credentials, imposing stance, and luxurious interior. However, the overall boxy exterior styling and powertrain has begun to show its age. Talking about the powertrain, available in only one full-fledged variant, the Pajero is fitted with a 3.2-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine. This engine generates a maximum power output of 192 PS and a peak torque output of 441 Nm and is paired to a 5-speed automatic gearbox.

Overview

One of the most legendary nameplates on sale in the world of SUVs, the Pajero has been a bread-and-butter model for Mitsubishi as far as this segment is considered. The Pajero has been on sale for quite a long time now, however, very few SUVs come close when it comes to sheer off-road driving prowess. The Mitsubishi Pajero is offered in both 3-door and 5-door versions, each of which is available in two variants – GLS and GLX. The color options for Mitsubishi Pajero are Cool Silver, Quartz Brown, Platinum Beige, Eiger Grey, Warm White, White Solid, and Black Mica.

Interior & Features

The dated-feel exterior feel of the Mitsubishi Pajero is quite carried forward on the inside as well. The SUV lacks the cool quotient normally associated with the segment in today’s day and age.

The four-spoke steering wheel with buttons for various functions on the spokes and wooden inserts looks severely dated, and so does the instrument console behind it, with no proper modern-day MID located in it. The centre console looks huge and wide, thanks to the presence of large touchscreen infotainment system at the centre, a small rectangular MID screen for off-road data above it and vertical AC vents beside it. The subtle use of faux wooden inserts on the dashboard and door panels look premium.

The seven-seater Pajero is packed with the essentials usually associated with an SUV of its stature, some of which include a premium Rockford 12-speaker audio system, sunroof, 9-inch roof-mounted screens for rear passengers, fully automatic climate control and rear AC vents. However, it misses out on many modern features which will surely disappoint those who are tech-savvy.

Exterior

From the looks of it, the Mitsubishi Pajero looks like a true-blue SUV with the quintessential in-your-face attitude. The Pajero surely has got the muscular stance and rugged appeal which an SUV of this category should have. However, the overall styling now feels too long in the tooth, as the Pajero misses out on many modern day elements.

The front stance of the Pajero looks quite mean, thanks to the subtle use of chrome in the front grille and large blocky headlamps which come with projector units within them. The placement of daytime running LEDs just below the headlamps does look good, and so does the silver skid plates on the front bumper.

The side profile of the Pajero is what makes the SUV look quite plain and dated. The SUV looks too old school thanks to the angular and large side windows and bulging wheel arches. The presence of very plain looking alloy wheels and lack of any modern day character line or curve is what dilutes the overall styling of the Pajero.

At the rear, the Mitsubishi Pajero has got the traditional placement of spare wheel mounted on the rear door, which does make the Pajero look macho. The small clear lens tail lamps look cool, however, it would have been better if they were LEDs.

Ride & Handling

The Mitsubishi Pajero is devoid of many modern day electronic driving aids, but the four-wheel-drive system is capable enough to surpass other SUVs when it comes to off-road driving. The super select 4WD system, as well as the sturdy suspension system, ensures that there seldom comes a situation when it gets stuck and loses traction.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

For the Pajero, Mitsubishi has got two petrol engine options. The smaller 3.5-litre V6 petrol generates 177 PS of power and 259 Nm of torque, whereas the larger 3.8-litre V6 petrol produces 243 PS of power and 327 Nm of torque. Both these engines do get a common 5-speed torque converter as standard.

Braking & Safety

The list of safety features of Mitsubishi Pajero might not look as sophisticated as a modern day SUV. However, the Pajero packs in all the basic safety features such as front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, active traction control, ISOFIX mounts for child seats, and tire pressure monitoring system.

Verdict

The Mitsubishi Pajero is purely not for those who do want to make a style statement and get pampered with all the modern day gizmos and cool features. Rather, it is a pure old-school SUV, both in terms of visual appeal as well as performance and drivability, which surely make it look intimidating and rough.
