The flagship SUV from Nissan’s luxury arm Infiniti, the QX80 is a more premium and luxurious version of the range-topping Nissan SUV, Patrol. While Infiniti has already announced an all-new third-generation version of the QX80, the UAE car market continues to get the facelifted version of the second-generation model, which has been on sale since 2018. The three variants of the Infiniti QX80 – Luxe Sensory (AED 325,000), Luxe Sensory Proactive (AED 350,000) and Luxe Sensory Proactive Black Edition (AED 360,000) – are on sale with five colour options – Moonstone White, Hermosa Blue, Anthracite Grey, Mineral Black and Champagne Quartz.

It is where the Infiniti QX80 starts showing off its age, giving it a slightly dated appeal, especially when the rival SUVs are offering much more modern-looking cabins. Nevertheless, the cabin of the QX80, which is available in three colour schemes – Wheat, Saddle Brown and Graphite for the leather upholstery – and two trim levels – dark spin brushed aluminium and dark open-pore wood, looks elegant and feels luxurious.

The upper layers of the dashboard of the QX80 have curved layers, with the SUV having an old-school multi-functional steering wheel and a digi-analogue instrument console with a TFT MID in the middle. The centre console has a 12.3-inch infotainment system at the top, with rectangular AC vents, knobs for the audio system and a panel for the three-zone automatic climate control arranged vertically.

The 8-seater Infiniti QX80 is heavily equipped with premium and luxury features like electric sunroof, wireless charger, heated rearview mirrors with memory function, power-adjustable steering wheel with memory function, powered, heated and ventilated front seats with memory function, cooled glove box, 13-speaker BOSE audio system and more.

Based on the previous-generation Nissan Patrol, the Infiniti QX80 has enough design elements to make it look different from the former. The major differentiator is the thoroughly revised front end, which features an Infiniti-esque grille with curved edges and a chrome theme for the grille inserts and surrounds. The sweptback trapezoidal headlamps have LED projectors with daytime running LEDs. More chrome can be seen across the bottom of the front bumper, with LED fog lamps on the sides.

The Infiniti QX80 has a mammoth, upright stance, which gives it the visual bulk of traditional ladder-on-frame SUVs. The large window panels with chrome surrounds and 22-inch machined alloy wheels make the QX80 look premium. At the back, the QX80 looks different from the Patrol with a revised design for the powered tailgate and trapezoidal LED combination tail lamps with curved edges, which are joined by a thin strip of chrome.

The Black Edition package offered in the range-topping variant has gloss black and dark chrome elements in place of traditional chrome trim and silver finish in lower variants.

I did not plan to buy the Infiniti QX80 but after seeing the car at the showroom, I was very impressed with its aggressive stance and the massive build. It gets the muscular profile of classic SUVs and the modern sophistication, blended perfectly to give it a distinct appeal. The Japanese heritage is reflected in the QX80's signature double-arch grille. The design has the appearance of waves being blown across a lake by the wind, inspired by origami's patterns and folds. Just the old-school luxury SUV I wanted

While looking for a luxurious SUV, I was almost certain to buy the BMW X3. But then I found out the Infiniti QX80, which is essentially a luxurious version of the Nissan Armada/Patrol. I had already driven the Patrol in the past and Nissan’s quality couldn’t be questioned. I finally tried out the Infiniti QX80 and there was no going back to the BMW X3. At a slightly lesser price, I got the old-school rough & tough looks along with good 400 hp of power. The interiors are also a perfect blend of both the classic elements and new technology. There aren’t too many fancy things all around and the cabin feels just the place for me to be in. The Infiniti QX80 is the best old-school SUV that I could get for myself.
