X2 Overview

Positioned between X1 and X3, the BMW X2 has been introduced as a lifestyle sporty crossover aimed at young crowd and go-getters in mind. For the UAE market, the BMW X2 is available in a single petrol automatic powertrain spawning three different variants – Base, M Sport Package and M Sport X package. Like every other BMW, the X2 too is being offered with a host of customisations options for exterior paint, interior upholsteries and trims, and varying alloy wheels.

BMW X2 Interior & Features

On the inside, the BMW X2 doesn’t break any new ground significantly and follows the traditional BMW layout of having a top-quality cabin with a sophisticated layout. The all-black cabin is characterised by a contrast silver theme running through the middle of the dashboard, with colour coded inserts adding some zing to it.

The three-spoke multifunctional steering wheel looks nice with the silver inserts and so does the simple-looking instrument console. However, we do wish to see the full digital TFT screen here as in bigger and more premium BMW vehicles.

As in all previous BMWs, the centre console here is slightly tilted towards the driver, with a proper trapezoidal theme carried out for the free-standing touchscreen infotainment system, AC vents, and controls for dual-zone automatic climate control.

With all the premium features one expects from a luxury car, it is sad to witness a glaring omission of Android Auto in the BMW X2. Rest assured, the X2 is rich in comfort and convenience features, with ample room for four passengers with ease, with the high transmission tunnel and low roofline eating up some space at the rear.

X2 Exterior

The BMW X2 has broken the conventional path followed by other BMW SUVs and crossovers in the past, and bears a striking design language which feels very refreshing without ditching the traditional design ethos.

Take for instance, the front fascia. While the BMW X2 too sports the car maker’s traditional double kidney grille with chrome surrounds, they do get different outer tapered edges as compared to rounded ones on other BMWs.

The headlamps are shaped like eyebrows and inculcate the latest of LED lighting technology, while still retaining the corona ring theme for the daytime running LEDs. The fog lamps are positioned slightly higher here, just below the headlamps, with triangular faux air vents positioned below them.

The BMW X2 gets a hunkered stance from the sides, with the crossover getting slightly hunkered stance and lower ground clearance as well as large alloy wheel options to up to 20-inchers. The wheel arches are slightly squared here as well.

At the rear, the BMW X2’s design resembles much like that of the 1-Series hatchback, however, the tail lamps are much larger going well with the clean theme for the boot lid.

BMW X2 Ride & Handling

For the X2 as well, BMW has relied on its great combination of dynamic damper control for adjusting the suspension settings as per one’s requirement. The M Sports steering with Servotronic and M Sport suspension, it feels a taut and precise car to drive and handle whatever the situation might be.

X2 Engine & Fuel Consumption

For the UAE, BMW has made the X2 available in a single 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission as standard. The engine transfers the power produced to front wheels, and here produces a maximum power output of 192 PS, whereas the peak torque output is rated at 280 Nm.

BMW X2 Braking & Safety

The BMW X2 is loaded with safety equipment on board, with features like lane departure warning, approach control warning, person warning with light city braking, high beam assistant, speed limit info, camera-based cruise control, traffic jam assistant, parking assistant, heads up display, hill descent control, airbags all around and ABS with EBD and brake assist.

X2 Verdict

The BMW X2 is not an all-out SUV in terms of stance and performance, however, it successfully tries to make a good impression with its distinctive styling and BMW’s traditional virtues of an impeccable ride and handling balance.
