Toyota RAV4 SUV may get GR badge

Leading Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota may lend the Gazoo Racing (GR) badge to its RAV4 crossover compact sports utility vehicle (SUV). The next-generation RAV4 is set to be launched in 2021 and according to CarsGuide, production of the first-ever performance-based RAV4 is underway along with a plug-in hybrid model of the Prius sedan and the powerful Supra grand touring vehicle.

It is stated that the RAV4 GR is expected to have the same turbocharged, 1.6-liter 192kW motor which hauls the Yaris GR model. The hatchback’s chief engineer Haohiko Saito expressed his interest to retain the three-cylinder engine of the Yaris in other Toyota cars. Saito, at the Yaris GR’s launch event, told the media that he would like to use the powertrain for other models.

The Prime plug-in hybrid trim is currently the most powerful version of the RAV4. It debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show last year. The car combines a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with a 62kW electric motor to produce a total output of 225 kW. The RAV4 Prime produces around 302 bhp, has a sports-tuned suspension and an advanced all-wheel-drive system. That aside, the car has a number of exclusive design features. The Prime is based on the standard RAV4 hybrid but has a bigger lithium-ion battery pack.

The RAV4 can accommodate five adults in an airy, open cabin. It comes with an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. A 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is part of standard equipment across all models and supports Apple CarPlay along with Amazon Alexa integration. An 8.0-inch touchscreen unit is available as an option. Other optional infotainment features comprise wireless device charging, navigation, an 11-speaker JBL stereo system, and four extra USB ports.

CarsGuide reported that the Japanese media is expecting a bolder look to the Toyota RAV4 GR for improved performance. Other new features may include aggressive body bulges, a squared-off front grille, and extra body stiffening.
