Hongqi H5

Cabin

The cabin is the reflection of everyday usability and functionality. There is a flat-bottom steering wheel with a large centre boss that sits ahead of a traditional analogue instrument cluster, with a 7-inch digital display set between the dials, a more conventional layout than the all-digital screens found on some rivals. The dashboard uses a trapezoidal housing for the air vents, with a waterfall-style lower console carrying the audio controls.

A 10-inch touchscreen sits at the top of the centre stack, paired with CarbitLink for phone mirroring and built-in navigation. The dual-zone automatic climate control is standard on both variants, with rear air vents included as well. Physical buttons remain for the climate controls rather than burying them inside the touchscreen menus.

The sixty-four-colour ambient lighting runs through the cabin with footwell illumination included. Also, an electronic parking brake with auto hold is standard across the range. A leather-wrapped gear selector and soft-touch door panels round out a cabin that feels a notch above what the H5's price bracket usually delivers. The wireless smartphone mirroring works through CarbitLink without needing a cable, a convenience feature not every rival in this price bracket offers standard.

Front Seat

• Microfibre seats standard on Luxury, leather on Flagship
• 4-way power passenger seat with rear electric adjustment button on Luxury
• 10-way power driver's seat with memory on a Flagship
• Ventilated front seats exclusive to the Flagship

The jump from Luxury to Flagship is a real one for whoever is up front. Both variants include lumbar support adjustment for the driver, a small but real comfort touch on longer drives.

Rear Seat

• Rear electric seat adjustment button standard
• Heated rear seats on a Flagship
• Rear air conditioning vents included
• Decent legroom for a car this long

The space in the rear is quite suitable for the H5's role as a car bought to be driven as much as ridden in. The rear headroom holds up well despite the sloping roofline visible from the side profile. A centre armrest with cupholders folds down between the two rear seats on both variants. This is a practical touch for passengers who spend long stretches in the back on intercity trips.

Climate Control

The dual-zone automatic air conditioning is standard on both variants, with rear vents feeding the back seat directly rather than relying on spillover from the front. The system copes well with Abu Dhabi's peak summer heat, cooling the cabin down quickly enough after a hot parking session that passengers are not left waiting uncomfortably at the first traffic light.

Storage

• Centre console storage ahead of the gear selector
• Door pockets sized for bottles
• Rear door pockets for smaller items on both variants

Charging

• Wireless phone charging pad on a Flagship only
• No wireless charging pad on the entry Luxury variant

The base Luxury variant skips wireless charging, a real gap for buyers who expect to use it daily.

Boot Space

• Induction (hands-free) trunk opening on Flagship only
• The entry Luxury variant uses a standard trunk release instead
• Generous boot space for the segment, given the H5's considerable length

A boot space of 480 litres is generous for the segment, given the H5's considerable length, easily swallowing luggage for a family trip to Fujairah or a full weekly grocery run without needing to fold the rear seats.

Considering its segment, price, and customer profile, the Hongqi gets a solid base of driver-assist technology across the H5 range. Though the exact split of the more advanced systems between variants is worth checking against a UAE dealer before deciding between them.

• Front and side airbags plus curtain airbags are standard on both variants
• Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Warning are standard on both variants
• Autonomous Emergency Braking standard on both variants
• Adaptive Cruise Control is standard on both variants
• 360-degree Around View Monitor and Blind Spot Detection appear to be Flagship-only additions

The total of six airbags, even at the base variant, is a strong starting point in this price bracket. This is typical of Chinese brands, as they offer more features than most rivals in any segment to attract buyers. The standard rear camera and parking sensors take much of the guesswork out of judging the H5's considerable length in tighter multi-storey car parks around Dubai Mall or Yas Mall.

Front

A tall, hexagonal grille dominates the front end, framed by vertical chrome slats that create a waterfall effect running down into the lower bumper. A red-accented centre slat breaks up the chrome, a small but deliberate touch of sportiness on what is otherwise a formal-looking face. Also, the stretched headlamps with LED projectors flank the grille, with L-shaped daytime running lights curving beneath them.

Side Profile

If you really want to see how it looks from the side, then park the H5 next to a Camry, and the extra length will show immediately. It is 4,945mm on a 2,875mm wheelbase, longer than most rivals in its price range. Hongqi has used that length for a low, stretched-out stance rather than piling on visual bulk. A single crease runs the length of the doors from front fender to rear. The roofline slopes gently toward the boot for a near-coupe silhouette rather than a strict three-box shape.

Alloy Wheels

• Both variants are offered on 225/55R19 tyres, so there is no wheel size difference for choosing the entry Luxury variant over the Flagship
• Flagship's wheels have this subtly different finish from Luxury's, despite sharing the same size, something that separates the two variants at a glance for those who know what to look for

Rear

At the rear are wing-shaped combination tail lamps with LED inserts. These are wrapped around a clean, uncluttered boot lid, with a thin chrome strip tying the two lamp clusters together across the width of the car. The design stays formal rather than sporty back here, in keeping with the sedan's overall character. A subtle boot lid spoiler integrated into the trailing edge adds a small aerodynamic touch without disrupting the formal, restrained look Hongqi is going for with the H5's rear design.

Colors

• Blue
• Black
• White
• Gold
• Silver

Five colours are available for the H5 in the UAE to choose from, running from the practical black, white, and silver through to an actual gold option that few rivals in this segment offer. Inside, the cabin comes in a choice of all-black or a dual-tone black-and-beige scheme, with leather trim reserved for the Flagship variant and a simpler microfibre material on the entry Luxury.

Performance

City Performance

• This sedan is city-friendly and ideal for everyday commuting. If you want to test the mild-hybrid boost, then take the H5 to Reem Island's arrow-straight boulevards.
• Pulling away from a red light near the Corniche extension, the electric assist fills the exact gap where a plain 1.8-turbo would otherwise stumble waiting for boost.
• But threading through Khalifa City's residential streets is a different test. The speed bumps arrive without warning, and side streets feel narrower than the H5's near-five-metre length suggests they should.
• The light steering does more of the work here than the car's size implies it would need to. Comfort mode is worth leaving selected for this kind of driving; throttle response stays calm rather than eager.

Highway Performance

• Driving on the highway when you are commuting between Abu Dhabi and Dubai should feel natural in the H5.
• With solid torque available low in the rev range, an overtake on the E11's single carriageway stretch near Ghantoot happens without a downshift or any real trouble. The sport mode sharpens the throttle for exactly that kind of moment.
• Most owners will likely leave the car in Comfort for the bulk of a long drive, saving Sport for when a gap in traffic actually calls for it.
• You will notice that the road noise creeps in a touch more than the quiet cabin numbers suggest, especially on coarser, older asphalt, a small but honest reminder of where this car sits on price against a Camry or Accord.
• And the Adaptive Cruise Control handles long, straight stretches without fuss, a very useful feature that is now a must.

Ride and Handling

• In both these departments, the H5 is quite well accomplished. The expansion joints and road seams get soaked up well before reaching the cabin
• You can handle speed bumps softly; you don't feel much inside
• Steering is light and easy at any speed, though it goes slightly vague if pushed harder into a roundabout
• The sedan feels planted rather than nervous, holding a line on the highway; no constant small corrections needed
• Body roll through faster corners is noticeable; the H5 leans more than a firmer-tuned rival would in the same moment
• Clearly quite comfortable enough for a long commute without feeling tiring over distance, the soft tune works in the driver's favour rather than against them
• Brake hard or swerve suddenly, and the car stays composed; the chassis does not feel caught out by an unexpected input

Hongqi offers the H5 in the UAE across two variants. Both share the same 1.8-litre mild-hybrid engine and 6-speed automatic.

Luxury

This is the base variant of the H5 range, with microfibre seats, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and the core safety suite. Ideal for those of you who want the H5's size and standard equipment without the leather seats or the Flagship's extra convenience features.

Flagship

On this top-end variant, apart from the base, you get extra features like leather seats, a 10-way power driver's seat with memory, ventilated front seats, wireless charging, and an induction trunk over the Luxury variant. Perfect pick for anyone wanting the H5 in its most complete, best-equipped form.

Zigwheels Recommendation

Despite a slightly higher price, the Flagship is worth the step-up for most buyers. The reason is its leather seats and memory-equipped driver's seat rather than any change in performance, since both variants share the same engine and suspension.

Anyone familiar with the market today knows that the mid-size sedan is not the first choice of most buyers in the segment. SUVs are the natural preference, and also the mid-size market is largely dominated by Japanese marquee brands. Yet the H5's pitch is simple: pay Camry money, get a longer car with more features standard.

Whether that trade works depends on how a buyer weighs day-one equipment against day-ten resale value, since Hongqi has no local resale history to point to yet.

Against the Accord specifically, the H5 scores well in terms of features, but Honda's badge still commands a premium at trade-in that most buyers end up paying for indirectly.

But if you want the most car for the money today and are planning to keep it long enough that resale becomes someone else's problem, you will find it a strong buy. Whereas those of you who see a car as a rolling asset first should stick with the brand that already has a resale track record.
