Kia introduces Platform Beyond Vehicle strategy at CES 2024

ABU DHABI: At the CES 2024, Kia introduced its Platform Beyond Vehicle strategy to provide individuals and businesses with modular, fit-for-purpose EVs. The carmaker also demonstrated its new PBV business potential by revealing the Concept PV5. This modular approach showcases the commitment of Kia to versatility and adaptability in its future vehicle lineup.

Kia showcased its CES 2024 vision and unveiled a multi-phase system that can transform the mobility industry. The PBV strategy is in line with Hyundai Motor Group's goals in terms of robotics, Kia considers PBV an excellent mobility solution, merging purpose-built EVs with innovative software driven by the software-to-everything (SDx) strategy of Hyundai Motor Group.

As per Kia, the PBV can redefine lifestyles and space as it offers tailored interiors. CEO Ho Sung Song emphasized the vision of the company to go beyond traditional vehicles to drive business innovation and fulfill diverse customer needs. 

The PBV system is categorized into three phases, starting with the Kia PV5’s introduction, an EV optimized for versatile applications and fuss-free operation. Phase two includes completing the model line-up, ensuring real-time vehicle updates, and enhancing user interaction with the use of AI-based platforms. The third phase includes building highly customizable mobility solutions and integrating a connected self-driving vehicle system in PBV models within a smart city operating system. Additionally, Kia will use "Easy Swap," which allows the chassis of a single vehicle to fulfill all kinds of mobility needs.

The PBV strategy of Kia features interchangeable 'life modules,' that allow the PBV to turn easily into a recreational vehicle, delivery van, or taxi. The Dynamic Hybrid body structure ensures that there is no compromise with rigidity. Kia is using recycled materials and bioplastics for environmental sustainability. The PBV ecosystem facilitates meaningful interaction among different models, offering different layouts. Kia is also planning to develop a robotaxi by collaborating with Motional. 

Kia is using a hybrid production approach to build a dedicated PBV facility in Autoland Hwaseong, Korea. The facility will start operating by 2025. It will combine cell-based and conveyor methods, with 150,000 units annual capacity, showcasing the commitment of Kia to meet growing demand.
