Hyundai introduces new Initium Hydrogen FCEV Concept

ABU DHABI: Hyundai Motor Company revealed its hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle INITIUM concept at the 'Clearly Committed' event. In Latin, the name INITIUM signifies 'beginning' and it highlights Hyundai's role as a leader in hydrogen energy. 

This concept hints at a new production FCEV that is scheduled to be launched in the first half of next year. It underscores Hyundai’s commitment to a sustainable hydrogen society and showcases 27 years of development of hydrogen technology.

The Initium concept is equipped with a single electric motor that generates up to 204 hp, offering 40 hp more than the Nexo contributing to a smoother highway drive. Hyundai targets over 650 km of range, which can be compared to the Nexo's 666 km. It also has excellent vehicle-to-load capability which enables the battery to power all the external devices.

The Initium concept is the first Hyundai that comes with the new 'Art of Steel' design language that aims at offering a "safe and solid" feel based on the demand of customers for SUVs. On the tail-lights and front DRLs, it includes striking plus-shaped graphics making it stand out from the internal-combustion and battery electric vehicles. Aerodynamics has been emphasized with a more rakish roofline in comparison to other Hyundai SUVs.

It has been claimed by Hyundai that the Initium previews a fuel cell production vehicle anticipated to be released next summer. It will likely be the successor to the current Nexo, as its design seems to be similar to prototypes that were spotted testing in Europe.

To prioritize commercial vehicles, Hyundai has shifted its hydrogen strategy, acknowledging the competitiveness and improved range of battery-electric cars. However, the automaker still believes that fuel-cell vehicles will play a role in achieving net-zero emissions.
