General Motors to phase out Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in its future electric models

ABU DHABI: Smartphone connectivity is a selling point for many vehicles, but General Motors has planned to phase out two popular smartphone integration systems in its upcoming electric cars. GM will offer Google-based software for drivers, including access to Google Assistant and Google Maps. 

According to Reuters, the forthcoming EV models will also feature apps like Spotify and Audible. The automaker's decision could allow GM to capture more consumer data on how they charge EVs and drive. Though GM aims to eliminate the phone projection systems in its forthcoming EVs, it will keep them as standard in its gas-powered cars.

GM executives have confirmed that the company will separate cars from cell phones by phasing out sophisticated technology like CarPlay that allow drivers to mirror the interfaces of their phones. GM has partnered with Google since 2019 to develop top-notch software foundations that will be tightly integrated with other vehicle systems. 

The automaker is also making a strategy for its electric vehicles to be platforms for digital subscription services. GM's Chief Digital Officer said a built-in infotainment system would help GM optimize the routing and charging experience for EV customers. 

The GM-designed infotainment system and the display will begin with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV. The new built-in infotainment system will allow GM to offer new services, features and content like EV routing, sharing real-time station availability, downloading apps and software updates over-the-air and navigation routing options for hands-free driving technologies like the future Ultra Cruise and Super Cruise. 

GM also aims to transition to a zero-emissions lineup by 2035 across all its brands.
