BYD sub-brand Yangwang unveils its first sedan, the U7, to rival luxury electric giants

ABU DHABI: The competition for dominance in the EV market is heating up day by day. The latest entrant to this segment is the U7 sedan, BYD’s Yangwang luxury brand’s latest creation. BYD's ambitious introduction of the U7 sedan under its luxury Yangwang brand denotes a bold step forward.

BYD’s new flagship sedan boasts over 1,000 hp and will rival the performance capabilities of established competitors in the luxury electric vehicle category. In the latter half of 2024, the U7 is scheduled for its initial release in China. This four-door vehicle is based on BYD's e4 platform that serves as the foundation for the U9 supercar and the Yangwang U8 SUV.

The design of the U7 is inspired by the U9, featuring a 0.195Cd drag coefficient and C-shaped headlamps. Its exterior bears a resemblance with BYD models and is expected to be around 2,000mm in width and 5,200mm in length, accommodating up to 21-inch wheels.

Yangwang revealed on its WeChat channel that the U7 boasts an outstanding power output exceeding over 1,000 horsepower that it receives from its four electric motors. The details regarding the powertrain have not been disclosed so it is still under wrap whether it will feature a pure-electric or range-extender powertrain like the U9 or U8. 

The starting price of the U7 is around ¥1 million (around AED 300,400.38) and in Yangwang’s lineup, the U7 is a high-performance flagship.
