The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has already gained quite a strong reputation of one of the most capable and luxurious business class saloons out there. To make the platform even more inviting, Mercedes-Benz also offers a drop-top experience of the same car in the form of the E-Class Cabriolet. This four-seater convertible form of the E-Class is being offered in three different variants to choose from – E200, E300, and E400 4MATIC.

Interior & Features

On the inside, Mercedes-Benz has ensured that the E-Class Cabriolet feels special with its overall design retained from that of the E-Class.

The three-spoke steering wheel, as well as the large and wide 12.1 inch full LCD screen behind it, is something which we have already seen on the E-Class. This widescreen incorporates both the instrument cluster as well as the infotainment system, which is a window to the technologies embedded in this car. The quad AC vents below this screen on the center console have been given a nice turbine-like effect in their design, while the rest of the center console has been given a waterfall like cascading pattern. The overall dashboard and interior cabin is nicely draped in quintessential leather, aluminum, and piano black finish, making it one of the most inviting places to be in.

While the E-Class Cabriolet shares its long list of comfort and convenience features with the E-Class, one thing it sacrifices on is the amount of rear seat space, which gets compromised to inculcate the retractable soft-top.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet shares a lot of things and positive design cues from the sedan on which it is based – the E-Class. However, to give its own identity, Mercedes-Benz has carried out a couple of noticeable sheet metal changes, making it look even more lustrous.

The front fascia of the E-Class Cabriolet looks exactly the same as that of the E-Class sedan, with the rounded-from-the-edges front grille with diamond-like pattern and the full LED headlamp setup. Even the front bumper of the E-Class has been retained in the E-Class Cabriolet.

The side profile is where the E-Class Cabriolet begins to have its separated identity from the sedan on which it is based. The two-door effect has been executed pretty well, and with the different alloy wheel designs and elegant looking chrome garnish on the lower window frame gives it a premium effect.

At the rear, the E-Class Cabriolet gets its own individualistic boot-lid design, which makes it looks completely different from the rear of the E-Class sedan with its clean design and number plate housing on the rear bumper.

Ride & Handling

The carpet-like ride quality and decent driving dynamics of the E-Class has been perfectly retained in the E-Class Cabriolet as well. This convertible car is blessed with Mercedes Benz’s ‘Air Body Control’ multi-chamber air suspension, which converts the ride quality into a magic carpet ride experience with almost negligible body roll. The ‘Agility Control’ for the suspension with selective passive damping system and ‘Dynamic Body Control’ with three different suspension configurations make it as agile and balanced as possible.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet gets a variety of engine options to choose from. Mated to a common nine-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, the engine options vary in terms of performance numbers. On the E200, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine puts up 185 PS of power and 300 Nm of torque. This same 2.0-litre engine in the E300 produces 247 PS of power and 370 Nm of torque. On the range-topping E400, this engine gets all-wheel drive setup and generates 335 PS of power and 480 Nm of torque.

Braking & Safety

On the E-Class Cabriolet, one can get a long list of safety features, which includes front, side, curtain and knee airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, cornering brake control, dynamic traction control and hill start assist.

With the E-Class Cabriolet, Mercedes-Benz has retained the plush and luxurious appeal of the E-Class sedan and has given it an altogether different definition with the open-top driving experience. Except for the limited rear seat space, it retains every positive trait of the E-Class sedan, with the added visual drama of folding roof.
