Cabin 

The Coolray's interior is where the Chinese specification advantage over Japanese and Korean rivals is most obvious and most attention-worthy. The 14.6-inch floating central display is the largest touchscreen in the segment at this price. It runs a fluid, well-animated interface that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the physical volume knob that accompanies it is the kind of detail that shows Geely paid attention to what buyers actually dislike about touchscreen-only systems.

The digital instrument cluster alongside it provides the driver a configurable view of driving information without needing to look down at the center screen. The combination of two large digital panels creates a cabin technology impression that is way ahead of what the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Creta, and Nissan Kicks offer at this price.

Material quality is something of a range; Coolray's upper dashboard and door cards use soft-touch materials on the GF and GF Plus grades. The lower areas use harder plastics. Compared to the Hyundai Creta at a similar price, the Coolray's interior feels more modern and more generously specified.

The panoramic sunroof on upper grades opens the cabin significantly and makes the interior feel larger than the car's dimensions suggest.

Front Seat

The ventilated front seats on the upper Coolray variant are the single most practically useful cabin feature for UAE buyers. At 45 degrees outside in July, a ventilated seat that circulates cool air through perforated leather cushions changes the daily experience of getting into a parked car more than any other interior feature at this price. The Hyundai Creta does not offer ventilated seats at equivalent pricing. The Honda HR-V does not offer them at all in UAE specifications.

The Coolray's suspension is tuned on the firmer side of the segment, which is consistent with its sporty visual character, but relevant for UAE buyers to understand before committing:

• On the smooth, well-maintained roads of Dubai's main arterial roads and highways, the Coolray feels precise and well-planted; the wide track and 18-inch wheels contribute to a stable, confident character.
• On the older surfaces near parts of Sharjah or the bumpier side streets in older Abu Dhabi residential areas, the firmness is more noticeable; rear passengers feel it before the driver does.
• Steering has a positive, direct character that feels more engaging than the Honda HR-V's lighter setup; the Coolray communicates more to the driver.
• Body roll is well-controlled for a crossover of this height; the car handles direction changes with composure rather than instability.
• The dual-clutch transmission occasionally hesitates at very low speeds in heavy stop-start traffic; this is a known characteristic of DCT gearboxes, and it is present in the Coolray, more noticeable in dense school-run conditions than on the open road.

Given the price point that you are getting, we recommend going for the top-end GF Plus for most UAE buyers, and the reasoning is rather simple. The ventilated front seats alone justify the step up in an Emirates summer. The 540-degree camera with an under-car view is the most comprehensive parking system in the class at this price. The power tailgate and wireless charging are daily-use features that make the car more liveable year-round. The mid-range GL is a good option, but the automatic climate control and ventilated seats on the GF Plus are features, UAE families are worth paying the extra price for.

The Coolray in the UAE is a confident statement about where Chinese cars stand today. Not long ago, Emirati buyers were not very open, but that scenario has changed. That means the Chinese brands have changed the perspective by consistently delivering what matters to the buyers. With the SUV, you get a 174 hp turbocharged engine with the 7-speed DCT, making it the quickest standard subcompact crossover in its price bracket.
