First Autonomous Network: Uber Deploys Baidu's Driverless Fleet in Dubai

Saudi Arabia: A new change is finally taking shape in the UAE, and Uber is one of the companies that is now taking a step forward with its latest move. With its advanced driverless ride services, the company has brought Baidu robotaxi operating technology to selected areas in the UAE. 

Now riders can get a ride through the Uber app and may get car that drives in its own behind the wheel. The UAE is the first market where Uber’s multi-partnership strategy has reached public roads. So let’s understand what this new technology can actually bring to UAE people.

The Dubai Deployment

This big move is going to make driverless services more accessible in the UAE, but as we discussed, this service is currently available only in certain places such as Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah. Here, some Uber riders now get the Baidu driverless vehicle for their journey. This also allows riders to choose the Autonomous option directly through their Uber app. Meanwhile, New Horizon Luxury Transport will handle the fleet locally.

People might be confused about whether this is going to work with all types of vehicles, not completely. The cars being used are Baidu Apollo Go RT6 robotaxis, which are especially designed for this driverless operation rather than being convertible from regular ones.

Right now, the RT6 can carry up to three passengers and uses more than 30 sensors to understand its surroundings and process details in real time. To ensure passenger safety, every car must pass Uber’s own Safety Guidelines before joining the network.

Why This Matters for the GCC

Baidu robotaxi operating technology is not just a new ride option in the UAE; it could be a crucial step towards driverless travel across the GCC. Ride-hailing is now becoming a real possibility in the region rather than something limited to a future concept. The UAE has already created a major framework that works to support public deployment of autonomous vehicles, as its autonomous vehicle policies and SASO certification process continue to take shape.

Baideo also comes to the GCC with considerable experience behind its driverless advancement. The company has already covered more than 350 million autonomous kilometres across 28 cities, with more than 240 million of those kilometres completed fully driverless, which shows the large scale of its experience and capability.

Expansion and the Roadmap Ahead

Uber and Baidu have characterized the arrangement as an opening move in a long-term strategic partnership spanning multiple years. Moreover, Operating zones will expand beyond the initial Dubai launch areas, and the fleet will grow. At the same time, Uber works with over 30 autonomous vehicle partners, completing millions of autonomous trips annually.

The immediate story is in the UAE, but the precedent carries further. Baidu vs. Other Rivals: Where's the Race?
