Chicago Auto Show 2020: 2021 Volkswagen Atlas debuts, to be launched in spring

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas has made its way to the on-going Chicago Auto Show. This new version of the popular mid-size SUV comes with a whole lot of styling changes and mechanical updates. The new version is set to be available for the American buyers by this spring.

To name things first, the engine options remain the same. The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas will continue to get the same 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged unit, along with a bigger 3.6-litre mill. The smaller engine variant produces a maximum power of 235 hp and a peak torque of 350 Nm.

On the other hand, one of the higher variants pushes out 276 hp of maximum power and 360 Nm of peak torque. The transmission duties are done by an 8-speed auto gearbox. Moreover, Volkswagen 4MOTION 4WD is also offered as an option. However, what’s new is the choice of paring the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with the 4MOTION drivetrain.

Now, for the changes, the new Atlas is 76 mm longer than the present model, which is due to the bigger bumpers. The front fascia takes cues from the Atlas Cross Sport with a 3-bar chrome grille design. LED combination taillights are now standard fitments. The dual rectangular exhaust tips are integrated within the bumper.

A lot of changes have been made inside the cabin too. The steering wheel is new and has the VW badging on it. There is also an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a digital driver’s console. 3-zone climate control, heated rear seats, remote start and a wireless charging pad are few of the highlights inside the cabin.

For the safety department, the 2021 VW Atlas gets a whole lot of standard equipment, like the presence of a blind-spot monitor, adaptive cruise control, rear traffic alert, parking distance control, etc. Dynamic road sign display and traffic jam assist are also taken from the Atlas Cross Sport.

Volkswagen does not sell the Atlas in the Middle Eastern market, so we are not expecting it here either. However, the VW Touareg and the Teramont don the powerful SUV class here.
