BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo

Like the exterior, much of the interior of the BMW 6-Series GranTurismo has been shared with the 5-Series. It is not a bad thing, considering how modern, feature-rich, and luxurious is the cabin of the 5-Series. BMW is offering three ‘Dakota’ leather upholstery options for the 6-Series GranTurismo – all-black, black with cognac brown, and black with ivory white. Adding more richness to the cabin is the fine-wood trim ‘Fineline‘ Ridge with highlight trim finisher pearl chrome, which is standard in all three leather upholstery options.

The cabin of the BMW 6-Series GranTurismo feels high-tech with the presence of 12.3-inch screens for the full-TFT instrument console and a free-standing touchscreen infotainment system. The lower centre console on the dashboard of the 6-Series GranTurismo features AC vents and a cluster of physical buttons for the audio system and climate control.

The list of comfort and convenience features available in the 6-Series GranTurismo includes six-colour ambient lighting, four-zone automatic climate control, multifunction sport leather steering wheel, power-adjustable front seats and steering wheel, memory function for the driver’s seat and wireless charger. The grand tourer also gets a large panoramic sunroof, 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, gesture control and rear seat entertainment package consisting of two tiltable 10.2-inch screens for rear passengers.

Much of the design of the BMW 6-Series GranTurismo is retained from the 5-Series sedan, given that it is based on the latter. The design of the 6-Series GranTurismo is the same as that of the 5-Series till the B-pillar, and beyond that, the 6-Series GranTurismo gets its own identity as a grand tourer.

The front fascia of the BMW 6-Series GranTurismo is the same as that of the 5-Series, with the former getting a decently-sized double-kidney grille with chrome surrounds and vertical chrome slats within them. The horizontally-stretched wing-shaped headlamps get adaptive Matrix LED headlights and dual L-shaped LED DRLs, which double up as LED turn indicators. The front bumper has a sporty appearance with a wide air dam in the middle and vertical air scoops on the corners.

The design of the BMW 6-Series GranTurismo is the same as that of the 5-Series till the B-pillar, beyond which it gets a sloping coupe-like roofline, flowing down to the edge of the boot lid. It also gets sportier-looking frameless doors, which have a sharp crease flowing through them. At the back, the 6-Series GranTurismo has the same set of wing-shaped LED tail lamps as seen in the 5-Series, though the boot lid here comes with an aerodynamic speed-controlled spoiler at its tip. Beneath the rear bumper, it comes with dual exhaust ports with chrome surrounds.

The BMW 6-Series GranTurismo comes with the M Sport package as standard, which includes the M aerodynamics package with front apron, side skirts, and rear apron with diffuser insert in Dark Shadow metallic. This package also includes 19-inch M Sport alloy wheels, the M designation on the side panels in chrome, and an M Sport brake with brake callipers in Dark Blue metallic and M logo.

Despite its bulky size and large dimensions, the BMW 6-Series GranTurismo feels dynamic to drive, while at the same time, it offers a comfortable ride quality. The grand tourer comes with an adaptive two-axle self-levelling air suspension, which has individual dampers for each wheel and allows automatic lowering of the vehicle at higher speeds for a more planted drive. The 6-Series GranTurismo also comes standard with BMW Driving Experience Control with ECO PRO Coasting (‘Sport’, ‘Comfort’, ‘Comfort+’, ‘Eco Pro’ and ‘Adaptive’) and Servotronic steering assist.

There are two powertrain options offered in the BMW 6-Series GranTurismo. The 630i M Sport version is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, claiming 258 bhp of power and 400 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the 620d M Sport comes with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, churning out 190 PS of power and 400 Nm of torque. Both these engine options are shared with the 5-Series, and so is the 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

The plethora of safety features offered in both the variants of the BMW 6-Series GranTurismo is front and rear park distance control, parking assist, rearview camera, six airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, attentiveness assist, cornering brake control, dynamic stability control, dynamic traction control, tyre pressure monitoring system and electronic parking brake.

The BMW 6-Series GranTurismo offers the best of both the worlds of a luxury sedan experience and a full-blown grand tourer. It offers the premium appeal, space and comfort of a sedan while offering the cruising abilities, aerodynamic design and driving experience of a grand tourer.
